Springsteen Calls for Bush's Impeachment (9/15/03)

Aging rocker Bruce Springsteen added a little political spice to his Washington, D.C., concert at FedEx Field Saturday night when, according to concertgoer accounts, he called for President Bush's impeachment.

"It's time to impeach the president and get a man in there to get us out of this mess," the Boss allegedly roared, according to FreeRepublic.com's Kristinn Taylor, co-leader of the group's D.C. chapter.

Another concertgoer told an online Springsteen discussion group that Bruce "got a little political, which I thought was great, but he definitely seemed to lose a bit of the crowd around me when he suggested we impeach Bush."

Others thought the Boss was merely joking, since he suggested that Bush be replaced by fellow E Street bandmember Clarence Clemons. But Springsteen reportedly followed his impeachment exhortation with complaints about past and present elected leaders who have misled the country.

During a Boston performance this past Wednesday, Springsteen prefaced his rendition of "Born in the U.S.A." with a statement he termed "a public service announcement" about holding our political leaders accountable.

According to the Boston Herald, he closed the show by plugging Al Franken's latest Republican-bashing book.

Last April, Springsteen defended the Dixie Chicks after lead singer Natalie Maines said she was ashamed that President Bush was from her home state of Texas.

"To me, they're terrific American artists expressing American values by using their American right to free speech," the Boss insisted on his Web site.

Sean Hannity's theme. The most lame bumper music on radio.

A few years back, we had some rude guy on our radio who would answer people's questions on about every subject imaginable. His show was boring beyond consolation, and his bumper music was even more lame than Hannity's, but he's not on the air anymore.

not some kind of passionate, we'll-be-together-forever love song.

Wellll, it IS, if you're an obsessive, jealous, freakish weirdo with an If-I-Can't-Have-Her-Nobody-Can attitude.

In California Springsteen called for Gov. Davis (Dem.) to be recalled and replaced with the saxophone player. In Washington he called for Pres. Bush (Rep.) to be impeached and replaced with the saxophone player.

In making too much of a light-hearted joke, we make ourselves into fools.

i love how really talents are overlooked for overhyped self-importants artists!

Exactly. He's top 40 pop, at best. Right up there with Air Supply, Terry Jacks, Leo Sayer and disco.

Bad AM radio muzak.

I suppose Brucie shouldn't be surprised that a few humourless slow-wits won't get that he was just making a joke...

What's with the insults, jjb?

On my drive home from work tonight (in DC) I was listening to Chris Core on WMAL-AM630 and he invited his listeners to call in and comment on Bruce's "Impeach" statement. Core's show starts at 6pm, but I didn't get into my car until 6:30 so I don't know how much he talked about Bruce's political commentary before that time.

Core said that he was a big Springsteen fan and had been at the show, and he said that he was surprised by Bruce's comment; but he seemed more concerned that no news outlets had picked up on it at all, other than a couple of websites. As he began the call-in part of the show, he asked his listeners (para), "Why isn't anyone covering this?"

Core opened up his phone lines for folks who had been at the show to discuss why Bruce had not gotten the heat that the Dixie Chicks had when they made their comments about Bush. The most pertinent information (as regards your "few humorless slow-wits" remark) was from a woman who had been at the show with her husband.

She related that she and her husband were surprised by Bruce's "Impeach" the president remark; enough so that her husband leaned over to ask an elderly ("in their 70s") couple in front of them, "Did he just say what I think he said?" The elderly man affirmed that Bruce had indeed called for Bush to be impeached.

So, OK fine, jjb... there's four of your "humorless slow-wits." But wait, kemosabe, there's more.

The lady caller also told Chris Core that when they went out onto the concourse some time after the comment, they talked with an usher who said that a whole lot of people got up and walked out of the show when Bruce shared his political feelings with his audience.

I don't know how many people went to the show, so I can't figure out what the percentage was of folks who were upset enough by Bruce's comments that they walked out; but it would seem that an estimate of just "a few" doesn't ring true.

Neither does the lady caller's "heart-rending" story. She most likely made it up. I very much doubt anyone walked out at all, considering the high price of tickets. If they did walk out, then they should stock up on happy pills before their next night out.

Are you involved with the DC Chapter? I think I've seen your name on some of their threads. This might explain why you are keen to perpetuate this non-story.

Springsteen is an idiot. Period. A "working-class" boy made good, wondering why the government "allowed" him to grow up in a "blue-collar" existence instead of the rock-star status that he has now become accustomed to.

You're right, Bruce has not done anything worthwhile since 1980's "The River." I used to be a huge fan, but lost interest after he jumped the shark with the dreadful "Born In The USA." With the exception of 1987's "Tunnel Of Love," it has been a continuous downward spiral right up to the latest piece of dreck, "The Rising." If he was putting out anything interesting now, it would almost be upsetting that one so talented could be so politically deluded, but as he is now a has-been, who cares?

Of course, jjb... Chris Core's lying, his callers are lying, posters here who heard the comments are lying... everybody's lying but you and the Washington Post.

Boy are we lucky that you came back here...

to bring truth and reason to FR.

NOT

You do have a bug up your butt about the DC Chapter.

Must be nice to be perfect, like you.
