Forgive me, but You're an Old Detroiter if:

You took a "moonlight cruise" to Bob-lo with Captain Bob-lo or went to Edgewater amusement Park.

You remember the big stove that was on Jefferson Ave. at the entrance to Belle Isle.

You shopped at Hughes and Hatcher, B. Siegel, Peck and Peck, Himelhoch's,Robert Halls, Crowley's, Shoppers Fair, EJ Korvettes or Federals.

You rode the elevator at J. L. Hudson, which was "run" by an elevator operator with her white gloves on.

You remember a Winkleman's and Sanders store in your neighborhood.

You remember the "Big Snow", Buffalo Bob, Howdy Doody, Clarabell, PhineasT. Bluster, and Princess Summer-Fall-Winter-Spring.

You remember Twin Pines Dairy delivered milk and juice to the chute on the side of your house and Milky the Clown performed magic with the magic Words, "Twin Pines".

You remember the Good Humor man in a white uniform, ringing the bells and driving down your street.

You remember the Olympia Stadium.

You remember when Vernor's  was made  on Woodward Ave.  and a bearded troll was on the bottle.

Your mom got groceries at Great Scott, Food Fair, Wrigley's or Chatham.

Your mom saved Holden Red Stamps, S&H Green Stamps, or Gold Bell Gift Stamps and you licked the stamps and put them in those little books.

Kresge's and Woolworth's were "DIME STORES".

You had an Uncle in the furniture business (Joshua Doore).

You know who Bill Kennedy is.

You remember this telephone number:  Tyler 8-7100 (Belvedere Construction) and the slogan "We do good work".

Your phone number may have started with Tyler, Vermont, Broadway,Kenwood,Diamond, Webster, Dunkirk, Warwick, Vinwood, Townsend, University orTrinity.

You saw the Detroit Lions play football in Tiger Stadium.

You remember Black Bart and the Faygo pop song.  Or how  about "Which way did they go?  Which way did he go?  He went for Faygo, old fashion root beer".

You watched Rita Bell's Prize Movie in the mornings.

You know who Sonny Elliot is.  Do you remember Sonny using chalk on a map of Michigan?

You remember Jack LeGoff and Van Patrick.

You remember Milky the Clown, Soupy Sales, Johnny Ginger, Poopdeck Paul and Captain Jolly, Fred Wolf from the whacky wiggloo.

You visited the Wonder Bread Bakery and got to take home a mini loaf of bread.

Your address had a two-digit "zone" before there were zip codes. Detroit19, Michigan.

You remember "Get on the right track at 9 Mile and Mack, to get the best deal in town.  Roy O'Brian...it's the best deal in town".

Your house had a laundry chute and a milk chute and a coal chute.

You remember going to Detroit Edison with your mom to exchange burned out light bulbs for new ones.

I went to the jr high right next to Cooley high. Fights everywhere. You didn't go into the bathroom unless you wanted to fight. That was when I lived at Finkel and Livernois.
That area was a war zone. You learned to look down streets before poking your head out.
I transfered out to Mettetal the other side of town.
I took two busses each way.

Terrible Ted used to play in high school gyms...missed seeing him with my cousins when he performed at their school, Churchill High.

Guess I'm not that old, but I do remember seeing KISS at Cobo. Their first tour (Black Diamond) circa 1973.

Drag racing on woodward or I75

Gosh...forgot about "Woodwarding". Back when the drinking age was 18. Lots of fun hangouts. It's amazing we didn't kill ourselves! Remember Maverick's DriveIn? Great burgers and milkshakes. Or Pasquali's? (we lived on Lahser between 15 and 14 mile rd.)

Maverick's rings a bell. I usually hung out around Woodward north of fourteen mile. Worked at a gas station just north of 14 mile that doubled as Chrysler's secretly sponsored street racer. They supplied the best parts and tech so Chrysler had the fastest cars.
We used to drink Meisterbrau in coke cans all night up and down Woodward from 14 mile to Pontiac and back. Never got caught. Never had any problems either. No seatbelts, smog checks. Cars back then were radical. You could do anything and we did. Cars had an engine with a gas line and an electrical line and lots of power. Sunoco 260 or nearly avgas was essential for really high compression engines.

Lolich. I remember reading an interview with him. He said people thought he had a rubber arm, but he didn't, it hurt like hell a lot of the time, but every 4th day, he said gimme the ball, it's my job. Over 300 innings several years. They don't make them like that any more.

When I was watching the 84 Series, one of the announcers pointed out where Mickey was sitting. It was the last seat, in the last row, of the left field upper deck bleachers. It was the only seat he could get. That's how they treated a guy who won three games, and hit the only home run of his career, in the 68 Series. Jerks. Owners didn't much care about their players until they had to pay them the big bucks. Think: J.R. Richard.

Buck Barry was on WOOD-TV out of Grand Rapids. He had retired to New Mexico or Arizona and passed away just a couple of years ago. He really was a neat guy!

Yes, he was a great guy. Compare that to the nonsense on network TV now.

WOOD-TV. We only got two stations back then, Channels 3 and 8, CBS and NBC. It was a major event when WUHQ moved into the area, Channel 41. They held a grand opening, and passed out FREE UHF loop antennas for your TV. Then we could get three, count'em, THREE TV stations! This must sound laughable to young people now.

CKLW was out of Canada...

Yes. I remember the first time I heard the call letters. I'd just moved to A2 from DC and thought, what the heck kind of call letters are those? Took me a while to realize I could get Canadian stations in A2.

Faygo, Vernor's, and Orange Julius were the big taste sensations the first time I moved to A2. Never got used to Vernor's or Orange Julius. Faygo put out a pretty decent soda.

I grew up in Royal Oak; worked at the Eastern Market most of my high school years on every Saturday; remember the Mr. Chips guys driving through the neighborhoods?; how about the Ethnic Festivals on the River where every weekend had a different nationality pouring the brewskis and cooking the food?; or, how about the tanks parked outside of the armory on 8 Mile?
