WASHINGTON (CNN) --With one recent poll showing actor Arnold Schwarzenegger falling behind Democratic Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante in California's gubernatorial recall race, some top Republicans are urging other GOP candidates to drop out of the race.

Businessman Bill Simon, the GOP nominee against Gov. Gray Davis last year, dropped out over the weekend. But Republican state Sen. Tom McClintock says he's in the race for good. McClintock, in Sacramento, California, spoke with CNN's Judy Woodruff on Tuesday. The following is an edited transcript.

I don't know about her, but I will not only suggest Arnold will come in third, I've wagered money on it.

I'm sure you could find a place to lay down a sheckle or two...... It's only some 42 days and you'd know if your bet was a winner... Does Vegas have any odds on this thing posted that you are aware of?

"Lied" is not the word I would choose (not being totally forthcoming maybe is more like it, but McClintock is more forthcoming on money matters than the rest of field going away), but there will be tax increases next year, even if McClintock is governor. The odds of that are about 100%, absent an unanticipated stock market bubble, or laws in place that will allow California to borrow more money to tide it over (the chance of that being about 1%).

The key is whether the tax increases are short term or long term. That's it. Period.

There are more Dems, in California, than GOPers. There are more Dems, who would aid and abet vote scams. The Unions are pro-Dem, even IF some of the members are GOPers.

Combined, Conservatives of every stripe and just palin Republicans, in Californis, are in the minority. Splitting their votes, between Tom and Arnold ( and possibly even more fracturing, with Ubberoth ), does NOT, rationally nor logically, equate to Cruz coming in third; not ever !

Thank you for proving, conclusively, what some of us think about your political " skills ".

That rests on the assumption that Arnold provides anything I want.

Okay.... forthcoming it is..... LOL

But the point is that in your opinion there will be "TAX INCREASES" regardless of what Tom or Arnold say about no new taxes and cutting others..

You may well be correct. I just hope that CA can get the situation under control. It will and does impact the rest of the country....

Yeah, they do, as well as some quasi-gambling thing (says it's futures trading) online that calls itself the Hollywood Stock Exchange.

I just bet with political friends of mine, but that's the kind of company I run with.

There are more Dems, in California, than GOPers.

And can you point me to a point in time in the last 40 years when this hasn't been the case? Ronald Reagan and George Deukmejian nevertheless managed to get elected running as strong conservatives.

Tom would likely wield the line item veto like a fiend.

"Balance the budget, you say? Ok, let's see here... ah yes, legislative salaries. GONE!" etc.

Well, eliminating legislative salaries might save 20 million or so. Just 29.8 billion to go. 30 billion might be on the low end by the way as the deficit. I am assuming a modest economic recovery.

I'm glad to see McClintock quoting polls as a reason to be in the race. Gives one hope he will continue looking at them and draw the appropriate conclusion at the appropriate time to stop making feeble jokes about getting endorsements from those running ahead of him and instead get out of the race - after, of course, he has made his precious "look at me, I'm principled unlike all you other scalawags" message that California Republicans make every election cycle without affecting things one iota.

So when he surpasses Arnold (I've predicted it will happen permanently by September 15), what do you say then?

About sums it up. As California slides into ruin, the True Believers will have the dubious thrill of knowing that their cherished principles are intact.

I thought McClintock did a good job in this interview. It leads me to believe that he will do a good job at the upcoming forums/debates on Sept. 3 and 17. I hope Schwarzenegger changes his mind and decides to attend the Sept. 3 forum with the rest of the candidates.

10 reasons not to vote for Arnold.

He is an opportunist.

He entered the race late.

He gets flustered easily on simple questions that he should have been prepared for.

He does not want to debate.

He does not want to sign a no-tax pledge.

He has out-of-state liberal advisors.

He is not a California native.

There is a better qualified alternative (McClintock).

RINOs tend to do the opposite of what they pledge to do in their election campaign.

If the Demos have a dirt bomb on him, they can drop it any time to defuse him, or use it as blackmail.

Here's a bonus reason:

I really don't need anyone to tell me how to vote anyway. I'll vote for the best candidate and if other's don't, that's their problem, not mine.
