Much of (Arnolds) strategy is based on cross over appeal to non-Republican voters given his comparitvely moderate views on issues such as gun control, abortion and gay rights.

But less than two weeks into his first run for elected office, Schwarznegger has already become a politically polarizing figure.

Roughly seven in ten Democratic voters have an unfavorable impression of the action-movie star, while the same number of likely Republican voters expressed a favorable view.

The actor won the support of 39% of likely Republican voters, 20% of Independents, and 7% of Democrats polled.

McClintock recieved 21% of the Republican vote, Simon recieved 12% and Uberroth 10%.

For the most part there is no substantive difference between Davis and Schwarzenegger. Schwarzenpubbies would settle for Davis if only he had some charisma and an "R" next to his name. Schwarzendoofus satisfies this need. When they look at Arnold they see Gay Davis on charisma steroids, with an "R" next to his name.

So why are the leftists and Hollywood crowd attacking him so seriously?

Moral cowards are not admired. Dana Rohrbacher ought to be ashamed of himself. Any YAF leader as he was knows better than to sell out to celebrity.

it is unwise to suggest that “anything is better than Davis” because to do so means that one would literally elect anyone to replace him.

We are not talking about a theoretical election here. We are not talking about an "elect anyone" scenario. We are talking about a specific Republican who can win (Arnie) versus a specific Republican spoiler (Tommy) who can help Bustamonte win. So drop the Td Bundy and Charles Manson strawman arguments. Stick to issue: Arnie, Tommy, and Cruzy.

If Doofus stays or Bustamante is elected, California will collapse into the hands of actual Republicans soon enough.

Because they're like many Republicans: they tend to limit their analysis to party affiliation.

If it was as you say it was, I have lost a lot of respect for the man. You so-called purists can have him.

You can go to www.tommcclintock.com and find the interview under "Watch More TV and Radio Webcasts".

Right. Surely it couldn't be that he is at least slightly more conservative than Davis/Bustamante and would support President Bush in 2004, right?

Notice its all the Out-Of-State know it alls

Hm, you might pause to note that Creekblood, who you directed the above lament to as a sympathetic ear, JUST posted a column by a Bales who resides in the state of Washington.

But I'm sure since that "Out-of-State know it all" agrees with your pov, it is quite welcome. True?

Get used to the fact that those of us in the U.S. who don't reside in California will continue to comment upon this election.

Is California a largely liberal state?

Apart from the Berzerkly legend, absolutely not. Read this;

1994 - Proposition #184: Three-strikes, life imprisonment for repeat felons.
1994 - Proposition #187: Cut off state funds for Illegal Aliens.
1996 - Proposition #209: Ended statewide Affirmative Action
1998 - Proposition #227: Ended bilingual education
2000 - Proposition #22: Defined marriage as one man - one woman.

These aren't moderate stances that passed overwhelmingly. These don't appeal to both sides, and they don't straddle any fences.
>

Can't argue with those. But . . . what does the California Congressional delegation look like and to what extent does its make up confirm your rebuttal that California is a conservative state, not a liberal state?

Some conservatives are absolutely stubborn idiots. They claim to have these principles and end up getting Democrats elected. It is total stupidity.
Aronld is electable and McSpoiler is not!

yo u are blinded by celebrity, Arnold is the spoiler, McClintock is the man for the job. (R)nold should drop out and support State Senator Tom McClintock, at least we know where he stands, what his solutions are and that he voted in all ten past elections, unlike (R)nold who did not vote in eight out of the last ten! Tom McClintock has been carrying our torch for years while Arnold was off enriching himself!

These people who say, "Arnie drop out!" would laugh their a$$e$ off if the Texas Dems ran some limp-wristed Marxist UT of A professor type. Yet in Texas, the dems are stronger than the 'pubs are in CA. Go figure.

"If this were a Republican primary and only Freepers voted, I'd have to suggest, "Asta La Vista, Arnold"."

An excellent illustration of bad polling... thanks !

....Do you think McClintock will bail out and throw his support to Arnold?......

Perhaps, he will like zealous FReeper supporters, fight to the death hrrdless of the consequences. No victory....no surrender.

Arrogance of the self-righteous will prevent McClintock from leaving the race. He's "bolstered" now that he is in double-digit numbers. Wow!

Unlike the Democrats who tell people who can't lose to get off the stage, Republicans will do nothing and McClintock will try to steal the spotlight until the end (instead of supporting Arnold and trying to influence Arnoldn's policies). Republicans may not believe in abortion, but California Republicans are expert at eating their young (and doing their own cause in in the process). Literally, they would rather be "right" than "elected".
