Former priest John Geoghan, a notorious pedophile whose case sparked the clergy molestation scandal of the past 18 months, died this afternoon after being attacked at the state prison in Shirley.

``The perpetrator has been isolated,'' said Kelly Nantell, a spokeswoman for the state Deparment of Corrections.

``Our investigation continues,'' she said.

The matter has been referred to the Middlesex County District Attorney Martha Coakley's office.

Geoghan was serving a nine-to-10 year sentence at MCI Shirley for allegedly groping a boy at a Waltham swimming pool.

More than 140 people have claimed they were abused by Geoghan, claiming they were fondled or raped at locations ranging from church rectories to their own homes.

Geoghan would become one the most notorious pedophiles in the country - not only for the extent of his rampage against children but because relevations about his case led to the unraveling of secrecy within the Archdiocese of Boston.

Bernard Cardinal Law's cordial letters to Geoghan, mixing discipline with praise for his priestly service, that pushed many victims from disbelief to outrage.

I just read the New York Times article on this. In their usual grandiose way, they have titled it "The Death of John Geoghan".

Now, when this man was in the midst of his criminal legal proceedings, it was more emphasized that he was a pedophile. He wasn't necessarily labelled homosexual in "mainstream media" articles.

Now that that crazy psycho has killed Geoghan, media like the NY Times seem to be pointing out that Geoghan was homosexual. They point out that the killer "hated homosexuals" and that the killer had killed one before, and "targeted" them, and they suggest that homosexuality on the part of Geoghan was the sole reason that this nut killed him.

IMO, pedophiles have no real sexuality--homo or hetero. IMO, they are so dysfunctional that their behavior and attractions cannont even be called a sexuality. JMO.

Several articles say that the crazy psycho (Druce) himself had been raped as a child. Maybe, like, this creature killed Geoghan b/c said creature had been himself subjected to sexual activity beginning at about age 7, and b/c he knew that Geoghan had committed the same type of crime?

I think I'll just reserve my sympathy for George Rollo, the earlier victim of this Druce. Rollo picked up Druce hitchhiking. Rollo put his hand on Druce's leg. Druce responded by killing Rollo in a hideous, gruesome way. I'd say Rollo's come-on, however abhorrent it might have been to someone who was not interested, was not even in the same universe with what Geoghan had done in the past.

So the articles say Druce was repeatedly sexually molested by a man, when Druce was a young boy. Is it too much of a leap to say that this repeated molestation probably contributed a lot to make Druce what he is today?

So how many Druces did Geoghan help to create? Maybe one, maybe two... maybe a few more. We'll see--unfortunately.

You must be a gifted psychiatrist if you were able to diagnose this priest's mental health without having ever met him or interviewed him.

Sorry, but after having spent 23 years on my job with folks just like Geoghan, you'll pardon me if I'm not as sympathetic as you about his being the violator of innocent children. I'm not so willing to provide him with the excuse of mental illness as you are. I've seen the manipulation, the games played, the homosexuality, the extortion, etc., conducted by these criminals behind bars, and the problems it creates. All this done to satisfy themselves, not because they are mentally ill, but because they are into personal gratification, no matter how deviant, or how much it might hurt someone else. Now if you're willing to defend scum like Geoghan, that's your business. I don't have to, and your conddemnations won't change my mind.

Two separate questions. When the state takes responsibility for someone, they must be held accountable for that responsibility. Mr. Geoghan was paying for his misdeeds. Tell me, who will pay for the malfeasance that led to his death? And why don't you care about prisoners ("because when I was imprisoned, you visited me"). Your thinking would make you a fine Nazi or Communist, since they feel the state can do what it wants even to kill someone whom they are to protect.

You can stick your typical leftist Nazi accusations. The state is not mommy. The state does not "protect" criminals in jail. Druce killed Geoghan, period. And you blame the state and don't mention the killer himself as responsible.

You have a totalitarian mind. The state is responsible for those it incarcerates. Massachusetts did not fulfill its responsibility. It doesn't matter which crime Mr. Geoghan committed: he was not given a death penalty by the state. It had a responsibility to protect him. Mr. Durce (?) threatened to do harm to Mr. Geoghan, and the state did not respond.

Nope. Maybe in Communism it is 100% responsible. The State cannot control the behavior of 1 nut acting out. There is no evidence that they were negligent- just rumor. They were protecting him 99% of the time. 100% protection can never be guaranteed.
