Geoghan killed in prison (Boston Herald)
Breaking news/by Eric Convey
Saturday, August 23, 2003

Former priest John Geoghan, a notorious pedophile whose case sparked the clergy molestation scandal of the past 18 months, died this afternoon after being attacked at the state prison in Shirley.

``The perpetrator has been isolated,'' said Kelly Nantell, a spokeswoman for the state Deparment of Corrections.

``Our investigation continues,'' she said.

The matter has been referred to the Middlesex County District Attorney Martha Coakley's office.

Geoghan was serving a nine-to-10 year sentence at MCI Shirley for allegedly groping a boy at a Waltham swimming pool.

More than 140 people have claimed they were abused by Geoghan, claiming they were fondled or raped at locations ranging from church rectories to their own homes.

Geoghan would become one the most notorious pedophiles in the country - not only for the extent of his rampage against children but because relevations about his case led to the unraveling of secrecy within the Archdiocese of Boston.

Bernard Cardinal Law's cordial letters to Geoghan, mixing discipline with praise for his priestly service, that pushed many victims from disbelief to outrage.

I'm sorry - I should have explained my point a little more thoroughly than that.

Did you know that on an executed inmate's death certificate, it says "homicide" as cause of death?

Murder is murder, whether out of malice or ill-percieved justice. Even the states know that.

I am pro-life, ecept in the case of mortal danger to the mother, and in the case of incest or rape. But that choice should be reserved for the mother, not by the courts.

But I don't beleive in the death penalty because it is murder. Nor am I happy that this priest was murdered.

"forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us"

"Thou shalt not kill"

"it is better to hang a millstone around your neck than to harm any of my children" (we are ALL God's children)

that's all

If they incarcerate a person then they SHOULD PROTECT THEM FROM BEING MURDERED

I think they knew EXACTLY what they were doing.

what does prison rape and shanking have to do with "doing the time."

Goes with the territory..."occupational hazard".

OK, say your kid gets busted for carrying an ounce of weed. Will you be telling him tough luck when he gets gang-raped, with at least one person in the "gang" likely being HIV-positive?

As much as I loathe liberals, I hate seeing their claims about "heartless conservatives" being proven true.

Is there any doubt that the Roman Catholic Church is a tool of Satan?

No. That would be Islam.

Please note: I did not pose the question about the Church. I am a Roman Catholic. I was quoting someone else who said that, and their post got deleted.

"My position is that it is none of my or anyone else's business what is done behind closed doors between 2 CONSENTING ADULTS."

Oh, not that again, please.

"But I refuse to sit quietly by and allow bigots to use one brush to paint all homosexuals as predatory pedophiles"

In one of the largest studies ever done, quoted on FR, over 70% of self-described homosexuals admitted to having disported themselves with the underage.

Attraction to teenage boys is not pedophilia; it is, however, one of the defining symptoms of same-sex attraction disorder in males.

Although they are only 2-3 percent of the population, male SSAD sufferers commit around a third of all sex offenses involving minors. Of the offenses by priests now in the news, over 90% (I've heard numbers as high as 98%) consist of priests molesting teenage boys.

So please, get off that "consenting adults" stuff. What this is about is the reality that giving SSAD victims access to adolescent boys must inevitably result in molestation at per capita rates astronomically higher than molestation of teenage girls by heterosexuals.

"Anecdotal evidence it may be - but it is my life experience and no one can claim I don't know what I'm talking about."

If you actually believe that a man who suffers from SSAD has been "celibate" for ten years, or that two SSAD victims were "together" for decades without a few dozen "infidelities" every year, it would be hard to come to any other conclusion.

Excellent news! One more sicko I don't have to support with my tax dollars! We should all pitch in and send the killer a pack of smokes. Now, why on earth is a convicted killer who just killed again being kept alive?

Why do killers get to live much longer than their victims did? Someone please explain this to me...

What has apparently been lost on you is the fact this sicko molested over 100 children. Exactly how many is that? If you counted to 100 right now, each number taking a second, it would take you exactly one minute and forty seconds to complete the count.

That's a lot of kids.

What is also apparently lost is contrary to that report published by the American Psychological Association, sexual abuse destroys lives.

That's 100 kids with irrevocably destroyed lives. How many of them have since committed suicide? How many of them cannot engage in a meaningful relationship? And all because of bastrad decided to sexually get off?

You have the audacity to call us hypocrites? Cowards? A human monster has been removed from the gene pool, and there is something wrong with us?

Put down that hookah and come back to the real world.

Why ? Because the convicts are as likely to rape and sodomize you as him. When the prison culture is unopposed it spreads. It becomes cool. People even joke about it and then it becomes an expected rite of passage. The weak and innocent suffer as much as the weak and guilty.

Right. And the prison culture may spread beyond the prison walls... -

You missed the whole point of my post. The items you posted here represent a compelling reason why serial child molesters should be permanently imprisoned or executed. I have no problem with any of that.

My comments about "hypocrisy" and "cowardice" relate to the apparent satisfaction that many people on this thread have with Geoghan's demise so long as it was done by someone else. If killing a child molester outside the legal process was such a moral imperative, then why didn't any of these people do it themselves when they had a chance? Leaving aside the specific Geoghan case, there are plenty of opportunities for righteous human beings to carry out similar measures against other child molesters -- most states have legislation requiring these guys to register as child sex offenders, so it's not as if we don't know who they are and where they live.

That's exactly why I consider these folks cowards and hypocrites.

Something else to consider is that Massachusetts is an utterly corrupt state, and there may very well have been other motives at work in this incident. It seems awfully convenient for a high-profile defendant (and potentially damning witness) in a major civil lawsuit to die like this. I'll bet your attitude about Geoghan's demise would change dramatically if you found out that his murder was nothing more than a means of silencing him.

I know. I didn't get on the thread until after the post had been deleted but I still wanted to weigh in.

I can see where you are coming from.

As for me, prison or death is alright as long as the pedophile is absolutely, 100% kept from re-offending.

What happens to that person once they get behind bars is not my problem.

Yes, I wonder why he was placed in a prison with "lifers" for a 6 year sentence...

He had only a 6 year sentence???? That's absurd. It shows the state is as bad as the church was on the subject of pedophiles ---- just a slap on the wrist and they're free to commit their heinous crimes on any number of more victims. Knowing he had only a 6 year sentence makes it seem better that he's been murdered. At least some boys are now spared.

IMO, Shanley is far more calculating and evil than even Geoghan was.

That said, I couldn't care less if both of them had been taken to the little chamber at the animal shelter. Letting a crazy psycho like Geoghan's killer run rampant is dangerous for everyone, but aside from that, harmful animals should be destroyed. And pedophiles are harmful animals.

I CAN'T STAND to think of little boys "from broken homes"--already full of sadness and mourning for the parent they lost, and the fear and pain that divorce always brings to children--having these things done to them IN THEIR BEDROOMS!!!
