Former priest John Geoghan, a notorious pedophile whose case sparked the clergy molestation scandal of the past 18 months, died this afternoon after being attacked at the state prison in Shirley.

``The perpetrator has been isolated,'' said Kelly Nantell, a spokeswoman for the state Deparment of Corrections.

``Our investigation continues,'' she said.

The matter has been referred to the Middlesex County District Attorney Martha Coakley's office.

Geoghan was serving a nine-to-10 year sentence at MCI Shirley for allegedly groping a boy at a Waltham swimming pool.

More than 140 people have claimed they were abused by Geoghan, claiming they were fondled or raped at locations ranging from church rectories to their own homes.

Geoghan would become one the most notorious pedophiles in the country - not only for the extent of his rampage against children but because relevations about his case led to the unraveling of secrecy within the Archdiocese of Boston.

Bernard Cardinal Law's cordial letters to Geoghan, mixing discipline with praise for his priestly service, that pushed many victims from disbelief to outrage.

What qualifies as a "cure"?

The classic cure for pedophilia, which has been with since at least 1911, is an 11.43x23mm hollowpoint to the back of the skull (like I said, Geoghan's been cured). There is no known working cure for pedophilia that leaves the patient alive.

I think that is the most important point made on this thread. The innocent were not protected and the guilty were not apprehend. The church was too busy passing judgement on their congregations sins, while the state was busy passing the buck.

Yep. And now all the child molestor priests cardinals, and bishops are all talking about forgiveness. For them, of course. Makes me want to barf! They deserve really long prison sentences, or worse, if you ask me.

Anyone who can't control their sexual drive enough to lay off the kids should be put away for a long time, probably forever. If someone wants to act like an animal, he should at least have the decency to do it with a consenting adult. Surely there are plenty to be had.

I have to take issue with the implication of that post... I have gay friends/acquaintances...and I will tell you that they are just as revolted with pedophiles as heteros are... There are gay pedophiles, just as there are "straight" pedophiles...and there are just as many folks in both groups who absolutely hate those who victimize children, no matter what their sexual orientation.
Trying to claim that every gay man is a pedophile is about as silly as feminists who claim that every straight man is a potential rapist or molester of little girls.

I don't think they are Conservatives in the Church which did the cover-up, they were people who believed the modern liberal way of thinking --- that all sinners can be redeemed (or cured) with the right kind of therapy and counseling. That everyone is good at heart and wants to be cured or redeemed. I think many of these bishops actually believe a pedophile can just quit so they crossed their fingers and covered up. It's the same reason secular judges are releasing child molestors into neighborhoods where children live, and why some people even say the sex offenders lists with pictures and addresses are unfair, they're all doing the same thing the bishops did, they're hoping the pedophiles will just stop.

He should have been executed by the State and not by his fellow convicts.

State execution takes so long that the threat of retaliation by other prisoners, who are notoriously tough on child molesters, is a far better deterrent against this kind of offense.

And let’s see how you feel if you get falsely convicted by being in the wrong place at the wrong time and somebody kills you.

I have a judge that wants to throw me in jail for a month for a very minor probation violation (shoplifting) FROM 18 YEARS AGO. The judge wants to protect the "integrity" of the court (yeah right). The new computer system just "found" this apparent violation. Most large stores don’t even prosecute shoplifting anymore because it is too much of a hassle (they ban you from the store). Should I be killed?

In the recent issue of "physician assisted suicide" facing our state as a ballot measure, I publicly made the comment, "since the doctors are bound by part of the Hipocratic oath to 'first do no harm,' we should leave it to the experts, the prisons are full of them."

As one who doesn't believe the state should carry out the death penalty, Why not let the death sentence be pronounced, and then allow the condemed man to freely walk out of the courthouse.

All sinners – i.e. all of us – can be redeemed. Cure and redemption are not the same thing; although redemption brings cure – or at least the ability to resist what may have been previously irresistible temptation.
