The GOP party chairman wants to let the public decide on a tax hike.

One day after the Oregon Legislature passed a revenue-raising package and signaled an end to its longest session, Republican Party Chairman Kevin Mannix announced an effort to send the measure to voters.

Sadly, in some areas of Oregon, those folks are heroes.

If we had a heat wave, and over 10,000 elderly people died, they'd blame the government.

As kimoajax said, there's very slim chance of beating Wyden. Short of him being caught molesting kids on camera, he's in there for the long haul... :-(

We ought to work on winning those House seats, it's disgraceful we only occupy one out of 5 despite having nominal control of the entire legislature.

They will make sure the schools and services for the elderly are punched if we turn this tax down. Too many Oregonians are so dumb....we've been allowing them to blackmail us and destroy the state for years.

The only hope is if REAL Oregonians start voting.

Where can I find this petition to sign?

I hope this succeeds.

"The only hope is if REAL Oregonians start voting."

Let's face it, if voting would do the job, someone would make it illegal.

I'm afraid that a lot of Oregonians are not only liberal, but a lot of them are so "laid back" and "live and let live" that they just don't want to pay attention to what is going on in the state; it might disturb their equilibrium.

The amount of government waste, fraud and giant salaries is enough to wake up anyone! It would be great if Lars Larson could daily read lists of some crap that our money gets squandered on. Lists of highly-paid trough feeders. Let the state cut that crap. They always threaten (and do) to lay off essentials like LEO's - and keep their fat a**es warming their seats until retirement. And some of the PERS retirements are 130% of salary!

Living in Oregon is in some ways like living in a feudal society - the peasants, and the robber barons.

(ps - I love your screen name - is there a meaning?)

I'm beyond pissed and so is my family. I'd really hate to leave Oregon but Vancouver is looking better all the time, although Washington isn't much better politically.

I think the Democrats have been stealing us blind at the polls as well as everywhere else. That's how they keep power everywhere. Remember the 2000 election, how SOME DEMOCRATS got TWO mail ballots? We didn't hear about all the other hundred thousand or so who voted twice or thrice.

"We ought to work on winning those House seats, it's disgraceful we only occupy one out of 5 despite having nominal control of the entire legislature."

The RATs have kept 4 seats through redistricting, kinda like in Arkansas. They packed as many Republicans as possible into one district, drew one Commie district in part of Portland and its suburbs, and the other 3 districts are marginal. Had we bene able to redistrict, we could have drawn an even more Democratic district in Portland and 4 districts in which Bush would have gotten 53% of the vote in 2000.

But, alas, we've got to deal with the cards we've been dealt. That means we've got two evenly divided CDs in DeFazio's in Eugene and surrounding areas and Hooley's around Salem, plus a third district in part of Portland and its NW suburbs that leans Democrat (David Wu's CD). I think we should encourage state senator Jackie Winters (http://www.senateleadership.com/winter.htm) to run for Hooley's seat. She's a black conservative Republican, and if interested could send the liberal Hooley packing. Beating DeFazio will be tougher, since he's pretty entrenched, but if we run a strong candidate and catch a GOP wave we can get rid of him once and for all. As for Wu, while his district gave Gore a higher vote than the other two, he is also beatable. Hopefully, we can convince some good candidates to run and finally claim a Republican delegation from Oregon (it's been a while . . .).

What's the point. Didn't the REPUBLICANS just cave and add all these new taxes? What is the point of voting R if they act like Ds when they get there.

Ignoring the Portland seat, which we'll probably be seeing a special election for when Blumenauer runs for the Mayorship (the job he's truly coveted all along, I don't think he wants to be in DC) and it's slim to no chance of us winning that one, we can probably write off DeFazio's seat until it's open, Wu is probably also becoming fairly well entrenched, and that's unfortunate (it really bugs me seeing a native of Taiwan such a relatively liberal 'Rat, that seems almost as apostatic as a Cuban 'Rat, they ought to fully know the value of freedom), but Hooley is clearly occupying a seat we should never have lost. I fully back Sen. Winters (who, if elected, will be the first GOP African-American Woman in Congress, so far long overdue), but my concern is her age (she'll turn 68 3 months after the start of the 109th Congress). If only she was a quarter-century younger (like new State Rep. Jennifer Carroll of FL). OR last elected a majority GOP House delegation in 1954 (with one notable DINO, Edith Green, who eschewed offers to switch parties for a long time, she was the last "Conservative" elected from the Portland seat).

Taiwanese-Americans are not loyal to any political party. They are swing voters who are apathetic toward politics. However, I noticed a Democratic trend among the Taiwanese-Americans that I know. I think the trend is due to the liberal indoctrination that they received in our fine universities.
