The nutritionist who condemned the protein-based Atkins Diet is working on a report looking at the benefits of a high-carbohydrate diet funded by the Flour Advisory Bureau (Fab).
It emerged yesterday that Susan Jebb, the head of nutrition and health research at the Medical Research Council (MRC), has been commissioned by Fab, the organisation which is recognised as the lobbying arm of the National Association of British and Irish Millers.
The council will be paid £10,000 by Fab for the study, which involves Dr Jebb reviewing scientific literature investigating diets that are high in carbohydrates such as bread, pasta and rice.
Last week she caused consternation among devotees of the Atkins Diet when she said that there was not a "shred of evidence" to suggest that it worked. Followers of the diet are allowed to eat as much protein and fat as they like provided that they cut out carbohydrates altogether.

...I've lost 51 pounds and 9" around the waist so far, and am fast approaching the half-way point of my diet... 62 1/2 is exactly the half way poing. More importantly, within a week, I was feeling better. My joints felt better and I was sleeping much better. It seems that my body "likes" the fact that I'm eating far fewer carbs and processed, synthetic foods.Hey! Did I write that??
Afraid my poundage is higher, not sure the specific inches (but ten pants-sizes so far, and counting), but otherwise, my experience is EXACTLY the same. Plus, relatively, I feel like I'm burning a higher-grade fuel, energy-wise. Isn't it truly remarkable... and far better than you might have hoped?

Balanced on what scale? If you compare it to the food pyramid, you're right, it's not balanced. Atkins is based on the concept that the food pyramid is completely off-kilter, so the generally recognized "balance" does not apply. Exactly. What Atkins has been saying is that the nutritional theory on which the pyramid is based, is WRONG. Atkins redefines "balanced"

I personally have never eaten as well both for nutrition and for taste as I have while following a low carb planTotal ditto to that.

The Atkins diet appears to be quite a puzzlement to modern scientists. They can get it to work in practice, but not in theory. I love that. It bears repeating, and repeating....

Cut out refined junk like white flour, cookies, white bread, high fructose corn syrup, most white foods, partially hydrogenated fats...
I don't "follow" Atkins, but when I look at your list, it's pretty much what works. High fructose corn syrup seems to be the real culprit, that and foods deep fried and saturated in grease.
When eating out, I like steak (lots of it), a salad, a good veggie, and some bread. Is the bread okay with that meal?

Here's another one: a "Herman" cartoon I saw many years ago, and would love to get a copy of, if I could. It shows a man standing in front of his doctor with a knife implanted firmly in the middle of his back. The doctor is studying an X-ray and saying "According to this, it's in your left ear."

Atkins is based on the concept that the food pyramid is completely off-kilter, so the generally recognized "balance" does not apply.I asked my Doc last week how soon the "Food Pyramid" would be revised and he said one group already had, putting grains etc on the littlle end. My Doc is a DO and is recommending a Atkins type diet. His assistant confirmed it. I have lost 14 pounds in the last few months and while that is not a large number I feel 15 years younger and I am rarely hungry plus the food is to my liking...

LOL. Kind of like the bumblebee which, according to the accepted scientific principles of aeronautics, can't fly...
...yet, never having studied aeronautics, stubbornly does anyway.

Actually the plan I follow most of the time is a hybrid of Atkins/Carbohydrate Addicts. I have to restrict when I eat my carbs as well as the types. On CAD it is more of a controlled carb plan in that you can still eat them but only for one hour so yes eating the bread with a meal at a restaurant could be okay if it doesn't trigger cravings later.
To: BibChr
Imagine that, Dan ;) Thanks for the ping. I'm feeling better about my new way of eating every day.

Has that diet change worked for her? It worked immediately and completely. She no longer has "incidents" of irrationality and hysterical crying. She just finished 3rd grade, and tested as having a 7th grade reading level.

Thank God, that's great to hear. That whole Ritalin thing... there's a sitch where the word "quagmire" DOES apply.

That whole Ritalin thing... there's a sitch where the word "quagmire" DOES apply. I wouldn't be surprised to find out that a decent percentage of school problems for which Ritalin is prescribed, could be better handled by diet and nutrition fixes. A lot of inner-city kids probably have a "breakfast" of twinkees and cola.

Yep, thought so. So with a low fat low calorie diet, no one can stay on it very long. The alternative to Atkins is a fried rubber egg fixed in a Teflon skillet, dry toast, blue skim milk, a portion of bacon the size of a postage stamp. Makes you want to race right out for that agonizing 'balanced' diet. I'm salivating already.

The Atkins diet is a very effective way to lose weight quickly. But it has a huge problem: it's NOT balanced. You mean that you don't get to eat cheesecake, ice cream, donuts, cake, candy bars, soda pop, french fries and pizza under Atkins? Yeah, I guess that is unbalanced.
If you are eating just meat, fish, vegetables, fruits, nuts and olive oils, you are on an unbalanced diet and are ruining your health. Get some Krispy Kreme donuts and Pop Tarts into your system before it is too late!
