A sign on a downtown Cleveland business gives notice to patrons Friday, Aug. 15, 2003, the business is still affected by a power outage. The city is slowly restoring power and water after a massive power outage struck Cleveland as well as other parts of the Northeast, Thursday. (AP Photo/Mark Duncan)

When I first found out that a larger region besides my neighborhood had no electricity -- and I could not place any calls on my corded or cell phone -- my next thought was, well, I hope cars are running. ;) EMP is what was on my mind. So I watched and waited until cars started driving by. Whew!

I wonder if the hotels that took reservations early on, and then had no power, are going to refund all those credit card charges. What!?!? You're kidding, right?

Here's where not to vacation to and my safe Chicago and others not hooked into a grid.

Reaction to crisis should be calm reasoning and deliberate action.True. But HOW you react depends on what the threat is. For example, in a "normal" power failure, going to street level makes sense. For terrorism, street level is where gases and germs settle...

Long time no see Donna ;) You are the 3rd person to bring up EMP besides me, we're still on the same wavelength.

The firewall built into XP is good enough. It doesn't block spyware,I thought XP was spyware...

Interesting. Thanks for the map. If I'm reading it correctly, glad to see Texas is not hooked in. That's where we're headed in two years when my teen goes off to college. I've been counting down the days since 9/11.

I haven't seen any indication of gas or germ warfare. The truth of the matter is the Power Companies all knew what happened and Terror wasn't an issue.
