My office just went dark - 26th and Madison How are you posting here if there's no power?
To: Joe Hadenuf
Upstate NY completely out.......Very similar to when the entire grid went down in the 60's which started in Canada.

What is the status of flights going into and out NYC? Is La Guardia and Kennedy allowing planes to take off?

CNBC said that CNN reported that there is a major fire at the ConEd (Edison?) plant at 14th St in NY. Is that the one on the East River that you see on the Circle Line cruises?

My wife says the con-ed fire is a substation. I remember the great northeast blackout (1965?).
jacksonville, Florida had a citywide outage shortly after 911, caused by a transformer failure. No one seems to know how to prevent these massive grid failures, even after 40 years.

Airport operations shutting down...JFK and others.

I am just reporting what I hear on the radio...it was a transformer fire at Con Ed. Now saying people are panicking in NYC. Also airports and trains are affected. Talking about evacuation of the building the reporter is in.

Toledo and Cleveland also downFirstEnergy! My previous employer. I'd laugh but I've got too many friends sitting in the dark up there right now. Like most utilities today, they are on the edge, taking chances to make a buck. Its a world where markets are more important than reliability. I think that when we dig through this, this will have started out in one area and spread around the interconnection quickly due to large frequency excursions. The grid is loaded to its limits these days.

There are major oil explosions breaking out in Northern New Jersey, per WNBC, who has a chopper over the area. I was told years ago, by someone in the know, that taking out a large part of the NE power grid would be possible if they hit that Con Ed plant on 14th street. I drove by it a few years ago, totally unguarded.
