They try to avoid panic.
The power failure is not the worst thing -- what could be worse, if this was indeed a terrorist plan, then what do they do next, as phase 2.
Or if it wasn't terrorist related, they may use this as an Opportunity for an attack.
They think that if they discuss these even as possibilities, it would cause panic.
Do you remember when that poor Florida guy was confirmed he had anthrax, they said the same thing, that it's not terrorism related, he got it, because he is an outdoorsman and drank from a stream.
The problem with these constant denials is that the government loses credibility.

Past presidents probably didn't speak during past power outages because the U.S. wasn't under threat of terrorism during past power outages.
Meanwhile my son just flew into Manhatten, wish I could talk to him. I was talking to him as the power went out, so at least I know he wasn't on the subway or in an elevator.

Bloomberg just said to "turn off electrical appliances, especially air conditioners".
Okay, I can see the A/C's...but how do I know if an appliance is "on" when there is no power to tell?
He should have said "unplug appliances but leave a light switch or lamp on so you'll know when power comes back on".

That's exactly what it looks like happened. It looped around the eastern GL.

We had reports for the last two weeks that a "major attack" was being planned for the "end of summer" in August sometime.
No...we should draw no conclusions from that, either, should we?

Different grid...along with Chicago, we should be fine.

WABC Radio quoted New Jersey emergency "experts" saying they are assessing what to do. This is an hour and a half after the fact.
Alarming that they had no plan in place.

Bloomberg:
"If you are feeling thirsty, drink water. If you are feeling queasy, go to a fire station, police station, or restaurant. If you are not feeling queasy, talk about it awhile, and then you may begin to feel queasy."
I guess not everybody can be a Guiliani...

At this hour - 1800 EDT - Kentucky/Tennessee are reporting nothing new, no outages, no events.
No directives from higher as of yet. FEMA went round the horn 30 minutes ago, nothing outside the affected zone.
Stay on Fox/CNN/Whatever, and keep updateing your fellow FReepers. You folks are doing a fine business!

Bloomberg sounds like he's addressing children in an elementary school auditorium. Does he always talk down to his citizens like that?Damn, no kidding, we were just commenting on that. Gawd! What an insult he is.....

Last night I saw on the local news (Nashville) that two middle-eastern men got arrested at the airport. They were on the federal 'no-fly' list and both had one-way tickets to New York.

You know you're right, no money from the ATM for anyone stranded in Manhattan, etc don't forget about all the people that use their ATM cards to get gas at the pump.,P> No cash. No gas.
