Thanks for your explanations. I didn't know much about the power grids.

This is unprecedented - that tells me it's way more than an "overload". The whole eastern seaboard is out.

Boston, Miami and Washington still have power so the whole eastern seaboard is not out.

Any word on when power will be restored?

In 1965 it took until 5:00 am the next morning.

Well, the power failure has reached out and touched the mutual fund market.

Wow.....

Amen brother! Open the markets up and everything will be just grand, they say. Hey, IPP's will take care of everything. Of course, if we don't start building some transmission lines to handle all of this new generation, it doesn't do much good.

He's going to use this as an excuse to raise utility taxes.

Thanks - Looks like the I-94 cooridoor was hit from Detroit to Kalamazoo.
From West to East along I-94. Wayne County - Detroit
Washtenaw - Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti
Jackson seems unfazed.
Calhoun - Battle Creek/Albion/Marshall
Kalamazoo - Kalamazoo and Portage

The Rest: St Joseph is South of Kalamazoo in West MI.(Three Rivers)
Ingham is split on power. Okemos is fine, Lansing is hit bad.
Part of Lansing is also in Eaton County.
Ionia is between Lansing and Grand Rapids.
And Genesee County is centered by Flint(60 miles from Detroit, 40 miles from Lansing).

Interesting that it hit precisely at 1600.... Scheduled maintenance gone bad?

Or a coördinated attack.

YESTERDAY The Shiites promised us problems if we weren't out of Iraq in 24 hours.

YESTERDAY two Pakis on the "do not fly list" were arrested at SeaTac, after they paid cash for tickets to NYC on separate flights...

You know you're right, no money from the ATM for anyone stranded in Manhattan, etc.

Not a good thing.

Also not good, if you're a woman alone and stranded in Manhattan (or any other city involved) overnight. What are they going to do with all those suburbanite's tonight?

The chances are remote at best. They can pull themselves off the grid so they don't get taken down. The rest of the Eastern Interconnect should be okay.

Bloomberg sounds like he's addressing children in an elementary school auditorium. Does he always talk down to his citizens like that?

Power generating stations aren't made of Legos or Silly Putty. They had an event, which is not uncommon, but perhaps came at a time of peak demand and it caused a cascading effect. Why is it sooooo hard for you to believe that an event like this could just 'happen'?

The involved power companies are monitoring and they know where and why it started and almost when it will be over.

Why throw panic on top of it. You and I may stay calm but we are rational. The masses look for reason to panic.
