New turn in Dr. Laura's spiritual journey: Convert to Judaism says she's no longer following rituals

Dr. Laura Schlessinger, one of the nation's most popular radio talk-show hosts and the most successful on-air counselor, is no longer practicing the rituals of Judaism – a religion she converted to a decade ago in her 40s.

''Almost 10 years ago, I talked on the air about becoming a convert to Judaism,'' she told her listeners last week. ''I was open on the air at that time about that evolution. Well, I would say within the last year I have had a de-evolution.''

Where is she now spiritually?

''Nowhere exactly,'' she chuckled. ''Suspended animation. I still see myself as a Jew. But the spiritual journey in that direction – as hard-core as I was at it – just didn't fulfill something in me that I needed.''

Schlessinger grew up in New York, the child of a Jewish father and a Catholic mother. She was a life-long atheist, who, in her 40s, began exploring and practicing Judaism.

''By and large, the faxes from Christians have been very loving, very supportive,'' she said. From my own religion, I have either gotten nothing, which is 99 percent of it, or two of the nastiest letters I have gotten in a long time. I guess that's my point, I don't get much back. Not much warmth coming back.

Sounds to me like she's still on her journey (as are we all) and I certainly pray she arrives before time's up (hope and pray I do too).

I remember speaking years ago on her show about how poorly the Jewish community treated her and her Orthodoxy when she spoke. She contrasted it with how warmly and accomodating the Christian community was to her Orthodox rituals when she spoke at gatherings.

"Of the tree that's in the middle of the garden, you shall not eat."

For Jewish faith, that makes total sense. For a Christian, its difficult to comprehend due to Christ's sacrifice for our sins.

Nowhere in the Bible have I read anything about getting your needs met.

Every child of God will have the needs of food and clothing met. Maybe what you were trying to say was about geting "wants" met. No guarrantee on the wants.

It seems that everyone here is gloating over her imminent conversion to Christianity (which is mentioned nowhere in the article) but her frustration with liberal Jews who see her as some kind of monster.

She might be feeling overwhelming guilt at failing to practice the commandment "Honor Thy Father and Mother." She could have made up with her mother after they became estranged. She could have bought her mother a nice house, found a caretaker when her mother was ill. She could have prevented the horrible murder if she had maintained some relationship with her mother instead of cutting her off.

I know my own family was not to happy when I became Orthodox, but we accept and love each other despite our different opinions. I think Dr. Laura should visit her mother's grave, pray from Psalms, and beg her mother (in heaven) for forgiveness.

I was brought up as a secular Jew and became Orthodox in my 20's. I also had difficulties in adjusting to a new lifestyle but it has been many years now and I look at my beautiful family of "Jewish missionaries" and I know that I made the right decision.

I know many evangelical Christians and I think they are fine people, but I don't intend to change my religion, which I feel very deeply, because they have been so nice to me.

I think she should pay a visit to one of those "Chabad rabbis" she is always recommending to other listeners who ask questions about Judaism. We're having a family reunion in LA at the end of the year. Maybe we'll invite her or one of us will pay her a visit.

Oh, really? You reveal a shocking lack of depth in your knowledge of Scripture. One of my favorite Scriptures, and one of the earliest ones I learned, is Philippians 4:19:

And my God will supply all of your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus.

You're kidding right? She is one of the most loving and compassionate people I've ever heard.

You must not be living a very good life to think that morality and justice is not compassionate.

Really. That's a mighty big judgement to make from one phone call, er, I mean post.

O.K. Let me see if I can explain this in words of one syllable or less. My point was not to contest Phi. 4:19 or any other Scripture. The point I was trying to make that a genuine commitment to faith does not necessarily carry with it a better life.

Case in point. We've had numerous occasions when hard core biker types and/or gang bangers and/or druggies have come forward and made a public commitment to faith in Jesus Christ. And I mean a genuine commitment. That did not preclude their biker or gang banger buddies from coming back to wherever they were and putting a bullet in their brain. And it happened. Not often, but it did happen. They accept the Cross, and a few weeks later, they're being loaded into body bags.

If they labored under the assumption that somehow their faith in Jesus Christ was going to automatically result in some kind of better, safer life, they were sadly mistaken. If Dr. Laura, in a less dramatic example, was assuming that somehow she was going to get some payoff by virtue of her newfound faith, she too was sadly mistaken.

God provides for our needs. The Bible says so. Fine. He certainly takes care of our salvation with the Cross. Beyond that, don't count on anything. And anybody who does better take a good hard look at what their motivations are for embracing their chosen faith.

The very idea that if you eat a cheeseburger or lasgne you can't get to heaven COULD be what's making her think twice about Jewish Food Laws. I never could understand how eating pork could keep you from heaven.

Following the dietary laws is about obedience to God, not about gaining eternal life. If God asked you to give up Snickers bars, would you listen? Or would you ignore Him?

Maybe you didn't hear about the coroner's final report. Her mother died of natural causes.

Welcome to last week

John 10:10 The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.

Philippians 4:6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.

4:7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

From what I understand, her mother was mentally ill. I have had an mentally ill family member and there is no way that you can protect a mentally ill person who does not want to be protected. The laws fall all on the side of the mentally ill person's right to autonomy. One can pray for an mentally ill parent from afar, and not become emeshed in the toxic relationship, if that is where one finds safety

If a person does not understand what happened in the garden, then the rest of his understanding of Scripture will be out of whack as well.........

Well duh... but Jesus removed the strict law that we must do this and that or we will perish into the pits of hell for it.

We are sinners and we are surrounded by forbidden fruit. Everyone eats that fruit. Its human nature. If it were just me and Jesus, Jesus would still die for me. That the gift most who do not know Christ, are missing out on. Their loss... But I would strongly recommend them looking into his work.

You misunderstood me

The rituals I am referring to are those that are required by Jewish law for
the forgiveness of sins, etc.

No one is saved by rituals but by the atoning blood of the Lamb of God
