Dr. Laura Schlessinger, one of the nation's most popular radio talk-show hosts and the most successful on-air counselor, is no longer practicing the rituals of Judaism a religion she converted to a decade ago in her 40s.
''Almost 10 years ago, I talked on the air about becoming a convert to Judaism,'' she told her listeners last week. ''I was open on the air at that time about that evolution. Well, I would say within the last year I have had a de-evolution.''
Where is she now spiritually?
''Nowhere exactly,'' she chuckled. ''Suspended animation. I still see myself as a Jew. But the spiritual journey in that direction as hard-core as I was at it just didn't fulfill something in me that I needed.''
Schlessinger grew up in New York, the child of a Jewish father and a Catholic mother. She was a life-long atheist, who, in her 40s, began exploring and practicing Judaism.
''By and large, the faxes from Christians have been very loving, very supportive,'' she said. From my own religion, I have either gotten nothing, which is 99 percent of it, or two of the nastiest letters I have gotten in a long time. I guess that's my point, I don't get much back. Not much warmth coming back.

Technically, she isn't an athiest. She's just in limbo, or needs proof. I'd define her as agnostic. Hopefully, she'll find her way.

She's just in limbo, or needs proof. I'd define her as agnostic. I agree she doesn't sound like an atheist at all. More like a questioning Jew who needs an emergency rabbi -- the kind where you rush into the nearest kosher kitchen, break open the glassed-in emergency-rabbinical cabinet, and rush the rabbi inside to the nearest halakhic conflagration.

** New turn in Dr. Laura's spiritual journey Convert to Judaism says she's no longer following rituals **
Could you please change the thread title to reflec the ACTUAL title? Thank you kindly.
In NO way is Dr Laura proclaiming her former atheistic faith. It's important to report TRUE article titles.

**Kind of a misleading title. **
Not only misleading...completely tweaked! See original article for real title.

"I still see myself as a Jew. But the spiritual journey in that direction as hard-core as I was at it just didn't fulfill something in me that I needed." Didn't meet her needs. Wow.
I thought the Jewish faith was predicated on being faithful to God as indicated by the Ten Commandments, and keeping God's laws as set down in the Torah.
As a Christian, it is dying to one's self, accepting the gift of salvation by grace through the sacrifice on the Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Nowhere in the Bible have I read anything about getting your needs met.

Christ preached a personal and private relationship with God. Just becasue Dr. Laura has now pursued this course does not make her an athiest. Maybe she, like many, is a tired of the hypocracy of the organized chruch leaders of all faiths. Or, perhaps, being an educated woman, she feels that she doen't need some sweating, Rolex wearing preacher interpreting the word of God for her.

It would be funny if she found a rabbi who has her disposition....
"If you expect me to help you, you're going to have sit there and shut up while I'm talking."
To: CMClay
She'll eventually come full circle and become Catholic,
like her Mother, and thereby make peace with her past.

From your keywords I gather you don't care for Dr Laura.
I do enjoy and respect her and pray that her search for closer connection with God bears fruit.

''By and large, the faxes from Christians have been very loving, very supportive,'' she said. ''They'd say, 'We're praying for you.' 'We hope you can attain this because of the work you do.' 'We can see how committed you are.' 'You are doing God's work.'She's a moralist - everyone's life, the failures and the remedies for everything being tied to either following or disobeying the ten commandments.
Considering how the moralist fits into Judaism, this is an interesting development. God isn't finished with her yet. Perhaps her journey will lead her to truly doing God's work, which would be to stop condemning people and start giving them the real answer - God's Son who fulfilled the law which we couldn't.
Prayers for her on this step of her journey. The atheist tag is just nuts.
