I cannot verify for what dog saw, but I am listening to KFBK and Tom Sullivan out of Sacramento. He just made reference to the "guber"enor in Los Angles making a statement. He said that it was supposed to be at 2:30 but, Tom predicts that it will be closer to 3:05.

I cannot see Davis stepping dow for anyone or anything - think Hillary. I'm wondering if the CHP will have to come in an physically remove him from office the day after the recall.

Behind the scenes the man has quite a volitile temper and his mouth is vulgar and acidic.

Davis will never resign.

More likely he's going to challenge Arnold to a debate.

Perhaps that washed-up Governor will cry and whine and say he intends to fight to have the election moved to next March than as scheduled in October.

I doubt he'll 'off' himself on TV, though.

Judging by the statute that you posted, my guess would be that Davis is probably going to step down in favor of Democrat who is on the ballot. The Democrat will be appointed interim Govenor to give him a head start in the recall election.
Could be. The dance would go like this:

1. Davis resigns & urges support for "NO and Cruz Bustamante" on the 2 recall ballot questions;
2. Bustamante becomes governor through Oct. 7 recall election;
3. If recall vote fails, Bustamante stays on; and 4. If recall passes, but Bustamante wins plurality on second part of the vote, he also stays on.

Interesting.

It might keep him from the humiliation but the recall will still happen, and it will confuse further an already circus-like atmosphere. And he knows it. Wouldn't put it past him at all.

  If the majority vote on the question is to recall, the
officer is removed and, if there is a candidate, the
candidate who receives a plurality is the successor. The
officer may not be a candidate, nor shall there be any
candidacy for an office filled pursuant to subdivision (d)
of Section 16 of Article VI.

One thing I have learned . The law is not what you and I think the law says. It is what the Federal Judges think it says. And the California Constitution says what ever the judges want it to say. If the Federal 9th circuit court of appeals says this provision violates Davis's rights to be on the ballot, Davis will be on the ballot.

I have no idea of what Davis may do. If I were him I would resign and let someone else deal with the problem. I can't imagine anyone wanting to be governor of California. I could only blame Davis for the 40 percnet spending increase when I am willing to blame Reagn for the 100 percent spending increase during the Reagan years as president. The Democratic State Legislature spent the money...Just as the Democratic Congress spent the money during the Reagan yeasrs. They will do it again... no matter who is governor. Unless the legislature in California is changed.. not much changes. Just as nothing changed until the Republicans won the House. Clinton could not spend with the Republicans in control of the house... at least not like they used to spend.

Taking the job of Governor of California now is like geting to be Mayor of Hiroshima the week before we dropped the Atomic bomb on it. It will not be considered a successful career move.

Mea culpa maxima. Now I remember it (from "Terminator 2").

I was about 13 when "Terminator" came out, so I thought it terrifically witty to repeat the line as "Live with me if you want to come!" :P

I'm still not buying that Arnold is the only hope, especially considering that there are no run-offs, no primaries, and only 1 election with everyone on the ballot. Now, if there were a run-off situation where a single Pubbie would be paired off against a single RAT, you may have a point.

I agree the silence is deafening. Hillary said she would support Davis but haven't heard anything from that camp so What's Up? is correct. They have someone in the wings? They just waited until they saw who declared themselves?

There's a reason for the confusion. The Clintons are offering to help Davis in any way they can, and Davis is telling them that the candidates they've supported in the last few elections are about 1 for 98 when it comes to actually winning the elections.

I'm sure the Clintons have come up with a novel way of saving his job, though . . .

Bill: "If you die in a plane crash, you won't be governor anymore. Then you can raise some money and get your name on the ballot as one of the replacement candidates."

The press conference has been delayed because Gray Davis is scratching his head, trying to figure it all out.

I doubt very much that he'll resign. All he has to do is get enough voters to vote NO on the recall issue. The confusion of all these candidates is going to work in his favor, actually.

The ballot's going to be very confusing for a lot of voters, and I suspect a lot are just going to stay away from the voting booths that day, in an election that's going to have a low turnout in the first place.

The recall issue is polling pretty close right now, so it could go either way, I think.

Interesting.
