Recall for McGreevey?

Does anyone know if there's any group that's considering starting a petition drive to recall McGreevey? Any individuals thinking about it?

A better question to ask is whether or not the New Jersey state constitution has a recall provision for the governor.

I think CA has distinct laws that make recalls much more possible there than in most other states.

I did a search and nothing seems to come up for a recall for McGreevey.

I don't believe the New Jersey constitution allows for such things. We are aften said to have one of the most powerful governor offices in the country. You'll notice that your governor does not share power with a Lt. Gov. or anyone else in the executive branch.

I don't believe It's allowed in the Peoples Republic of New Jersey. Initiative and Referendum was something Republicans ran on a few years ago, promising it to all if elected. But, lo and behold, once they got into office, this could not be. Why it might actually give the commoners of NJ an actual voice in their own state. Imagine that? Instead we just bend over and take it. McSleazy is the WORST.

The 1947 New Jersey Constitution does permit referenda, which is where the legislature punts an issue to the people for a vote. The state constitution, however, does not have provisions and initiatives or recalls.

Possibly. But the idea this time around is that McGreevey screws up and we get Schundler. He's already working on building support for 2005. The only big question is whether the Republicans would rather commit sepuku again than have an oursider win.

Article I, Section 2b of the Constitution of the State of New Jersey (1947) reads:

The people reserve unto themselves the power to recall, after at least one year of service, any elected official in this State or representing this State in the United States Congress. The Legislature shall enact laws to provide for such recall elections. Any such laws shall include a provision that a recall election shall be held upon petition of at least 25% of the registered voters in the electoral district of the official sought to be recalled. If legislation to implement this constitutional amendment is not enacted within one year of the adoption of the amendment, the Secretary of State shall, by regulation, implement the constitutional amendment, except that regulations adopted by the Secretary of State shall be superseded by any subsequent legislation consistent with this constitutional amendment governing recall elections. The sufficiency of any statement of reasons or grounds procedurally required shall be a political rather than a judicial question.

Interesting, but this comes from the section of the NJ Constitution with respect to the legislature, not the executive.

I wasn't being facetious...NJ is trending Democrat....you can't ignore that....the historical pattern is that the dems screw up, then a Pubby gets elected, because the electorate votes AGAINST the Dem....not for the Pubby...Bell almost pulled it off against Bradley...Florio got clocked by Whitman becuase he broke his pledge, and McGrevey may follow James to the dog-house....we shall see...it could work for Schundler...because the swing voters wouldn't be voting FOR him...they'd be out to dump Jimmy..

If this provision can be extended to the governor, then after one year of service (concluded January 2003), should 25% of the electorate sign a recall petition, a recall election can be held.

I was wrong. McGreevey can be removed.

Now -- just what has McGreevey done that would merit recall? Besides just being a typical Democrat. (Remember, I left South Jersey in '71 when I entered the Army, so I'm out of the loop.)

New Jersey is trending Democrat but the immigrants, retirees, and urban poor driving that might respond to a good Republican governor. If Schundler can get re-elected in Jersey City, he can do OK in NJ.

want to win so they will force him not to run again.

I'm predicting that pattern will be broken in '05 by Schundler.
