[history]
Republican Rep. Darrell Issa, the driving force behind the effort to recall Gov. Gray Davis, was prosecuted with his brother in San Jose in 1980 for allegedly faking the theft of Issa's Mercedes Benz sedan and selling it to a car dealer for $16,000, according to court records.

Sigh.
They slimed Bill Simon this way, too.
Note the key omission of the word "convicted".
Ah well... McClintock's my man this time around anyway!

(My letter to the editor)
This is a characteristic attempt by the democrat party and its deceitful media agents to smear. They are completely dishonest in the manner this "news" is written about Issa, while ignoring (a) the obvious facts of this case, which Issa freely discusses (and even uses as a selling point), and (b) the democratic stench from that open sewer known as Sacramento.
This is a non-story by any measure, but the completely dishonest opening passage by Lance Williams and Carla Marinucci, Chronicle staff writers, is vile democrat propaganda and disinformation at its worst.
Bottom line is that Williams and Marinucci are desperate. I will give some real news: DAVIS IS GOING DOWN!!

If I were Californian, I wouldn't support Issa for dogcatcher after that hissy-fit scene he made short after 9-11 about being screened at an airport.
But, this article about an arrest--dismissed--23 years ago--is nothing more than a 3-D smear (Desperately Digging for Dirt)

Old news. This story came out in at least one prior campaign. It had no effect.
I doubt Issa will be on the ticket to replace davis anyway, so it's wasted energy as it gives no reason to vote for Davis.

I don't know McClintock, but Issa ass is 0wn3d by Hollywood. He's said some stuff that's right up there with Orrin Hatch's loony schemes about hacking downloaders.
And, while he may not have been convicted, it does sound like he is exactly the wrong kind of guy to get all preachy about downloading if he was involved in car theft and insurance fraud.

This is step one of the sliming.
Since people tend to be skeptical of raw accusations in TV commercials, the Dems have perfected this process with their willing accomplices in the press.
1) Early in the campaign opposition research uncovers a scurrilous tidbit that needs some "validating"
2) Go looking for a left-leaning, lazy reporter (99% of them these days)
3) Take the press moocher out for an expensive meal and then give them the file with orders of strict anonymity.
4)Wait for the story to run, confident that long stretches of the imagination will be given factual credibility.
5) In the final weeks of the campaign create commercials that declare "ACCORDING TO THE SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS THIS GUY WAS ONCE MARRIED TO A BARNYARD ANIMAL"
This was done on 6 or 7 occasions to Bill Simon. It was really sickening. These lazy 28-year-old airhead reporters, too dumb to understand the difference between a shotgun and a hunting rifle are supposed to have gone to remote archives in New York City and the Bahamas and uncovered arcane records from 10 years ago. It just doesn't happen that way.
This stuff is assembled by seasoned gumshoes who spend hours in dusty basement poring over ancient documents. Sometimes its the opposition, sometimes its Planned Parenthood, or a major labor union that comes up with this crap. The cycle is as predicatable as the phases of the moon.

Is it pronounced like "Hissa," but without the H, or like "Eye-sa"? I've heard both, and I'm curious.

I agree. His hissy fit is more troubling.
To: RightOnTheLeftCoast
I think McClintock would be a better choice too...but it's sure STRANGE that this didn't come up during Issa's runs for election...it's only when DAVIS feels threatened that it suddenly come to light.
Davis is clueless. And STILL nuts.
