So how much did the M1A upgrade cost with all the bells and whistles? I'm just a poor ex soldier, so I'm not sure I could afford a world class rifle.

I've told this story on FR once or twice. I was on a range at Ft. Polk one weekend teaching my wife how to handle a handgun. the marksmanship team was a few lanes down from me. They asked me if I wanted to shoot their M14. Heck Yea!

I nailed a 300m target on the first round. There is nooooo way you could ever do that with any version of the M16, right off the rack.

Hope everyone signs the petition. Maybe we should be like the democraps and vote like they do in Chicago and Detroit, lol.

I have two Garands. Got them about three years ago just before they went from $400 to $500+ each. The 1953 SA is all original except for the front sight, gas cylinder and gas cylinder lock. The '55 HRA is original except for the op rod and stock. Both shoot exceptionally well.

For sniper work, I actually prefer the Garand in .308 because of the ability to get low without the magazine interference. Also, if I lose or damage a couple of clips, so what? I have 100 more. If i lose or damage a $60 M14 mag, it hurts. BTW, if we can get the government to release these M-14's, they will also dispose of a LOT of mags, probably several million. That will drive the price back down to reasonable levels, like $12.

Good morning!

I am unaware of deptartments getting SAAW's, 60's or 50 cals. This is the first I have heard of that.

Perhaps the gubment thinks things may get bad with terrorists/muslims in this country. I could see that happening. Particularly in bigger cities. Who knows what kind of armament they have.

That's the only reason I can see. Don't know if things will ever get that bad.

Oh, I guess if Hitlery is elected President in '08 we may need them.

I don't know who'd they issue them too if we got them. Most of our guys are former military but not many of them were grunts.

Take care.

I shot and carried one in the Navy. It is a great rifle.

Sgt. Shughart used an M-14 in Somalia.

BlackHawk Down portrayed SFC Shughart's actions admirably.

What a hero!

I just signed - now the count is up to VERY close to 9,000.

I want an M1A - but they are too expensive now. If the gov't actually decides to sell the M-14s, the prices will decline to a much more reasonable price, as will the mags. I think that the only chance of this is if some Congresscritter is contacted and inserts a provision in some "must pass" bill. If anyone knows of a willing 'critter, please contact him/her.

Have you looked at the price of a Garand on the street lately? Hint: a genuint USGI Garnad (even a mixmaster that has been through 3 arsenal rebuilds) will be north of $600.

There's one in my local paper today for $400. I don't ecpect it to be there long at that price, but if it's still there when I get Friday's paycheck it's mine.

I expect it's one of the recent ex-Danish army imports. The ones I've come across so far worked just fine, though the collectors sneer.

First off, the organization you will be dealing with is called the Civilian Marksmanship program. They have a website at

www.odcmp.com

Unless you are old enough to have trained with a Garand in the military, you have to prove that you are a competitor. Check the website for a High Power Rifle match near you. You will need a military rifle that can be reloaded within ten shots in 60 seconds. Anything with good sights and a box magazine are preferred. My wife used a Mini-14. I have even seen SKS's. One guy used a Trapdoor .45-70 for the fun of it. Some clubs have loaners. Once you shoot the fifty round match, they will provide you with the necessary paperwork that says that you shot the match.

You have to be a law abiding citizen, sane, 18 or older, U.S. Citizen. I used my NRA classification card, My CCW license and my voter's registration.

Some clubs have special classes just for the CMP. I attended a Garand Seminar at Terrell TX just for giggles and to suppport a friend who wanted a Danish.

At one time Remington, Mossberg and H&R .22's were available. The only .22 that's still available is the Kimber. The sights on the H&R were worth what I paid for the whole rifle.

If you have any more questions, let me know.

I used a little bit of my inheritance from my mom and spent about 2 grand at ROBAR; while the Shepherd scope set me back about $525.00.

Next time, I'd probably get either the Springfield Armory rangefinding scope or a Trijiicon Mil-dot with illuminated reticle. Mil-dot is a bit of a pain, but once you learn the formula it can set up right quick! Somewhere, I have a Mil-Dot instruction manual a buddy of mine got me from his unit's MTU (Marksmanship Training Unit).

Our local Sheriff acquired an M2 a while back. He's got it mounted on a armored wheeled vehicle. His comment on the news was that they may need the capability to shoot down a terrorist controlled aircraft...talk about not living in a fantasy...not only would the population be endangered by cutting loose with an M2, but I believe the cyclic rate is too slow for efficient anti aircraft application, that and the fact that Luke AFB is just west of town with real anti aircraft trigger pullers...A law enforcement department with crew served weapons does not make sense...

That's what I did too. I joined a club that does high power matches as well....but I vaguely remember the fact that at the time I was still an Armor Captain in the USAR and my security clearances got me something too....can't remember if it was a waiver for some requirement, just that they said it was important at the time....
