WHY AL FRANKEN ISN’T THE LIBERAL TALK RADIO SAVIOR

WHY AL FRANKEN ISN’T THE LIBERAL TALK RADIO SAVIOR

You might remember Al Franken. He’s the far-left comedian that Democrats thought might be their talk radio savior. It seems that Mr. Frankin was at the White House Correspondent’s Dinner this past Saturday night. Others in attendance heard Franken shout to Assistant Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz - "Clinton's military did pretty well in Iraq, huh?" Wolfowitz was heard to reply with a suggestion that Franken commit a physical improbability.

Here, my friends, is an example of why Al Franken isn’t going to make it as the great liberal savior on talk radio. As soon as Franken goes on the air with this stupid “Clinton’s military” line someone is going to call with a challenge.

Caller: “Hey, Al. So you say that this was Clinton’s military that Bush used to clobber Saddam Hussein?”

Franken: Sure it was! Those men were recruited for the military when Clinton was in office. Those weapons systems were developed under Clinton! It’s Clinton’s military!

Caller: Fine. OK, I’ll accept that. Now, tell me why you keep calling the current economy Bush’s economy. Isn’t it true that the dot-com bust happened under Clinton? Isn’t it true that the technology bust happened under Clinton? Isn’t it true that the Enron accounting irregularities began while Clinton was president? Isn’t it true that our economic growth started to slow down while Clinton was in office? If it’s Clinton’s military, why isn’t it Clinton’s economy?

Franken: “Uh … thanks for calling! Time for a break. We’ll be right back.”

Uh oh … a blow to our liberal hero’s credibility! And that, my friends, is why liberals just can’t handle talk radio!

By the way, it isn’t Clinton’s military. George Bush is the commander in chief. Pentagon Don is the Defense Secretary. These men and women went into battle following a man who had not expressed his “loathing” of the military. Clinton’s military had no respect for their commander-in-chief. Bush’s military loves their commander-in-chief. Military culture and morale starts at the top. A fish rots from the head first.

The title of the book about him says it all: "Al Franken is a buck toothed moron."

To be a comedian, doesn't one have to be funny, or at least entertaining?

Wolfowitz was heard to reply with a suggestion that Franken commit a physical improbability.

Not if it included his head and an orifice.

As I recall, Congress authorized a large drawdown, at least among the Army in Europe to reflect the collapse of the Soviet threat. VII Corps fought the Gulf War and then went away; at one point 3ID had about 6-7 brigades as divisions were drawn down, returned to the US, or otherwise reshuffled. President Clin-ton, it seems to me, continued this policy.

But more to the immediate point of this article, if Al Franken is so damned smart, why isn't he in office?

Clinton cut combat army divisions from 18 to 10, combat fighter wings from 24 to 12, and intelligence gathering assets by 40%, along with 800,000 combat personnel, all while assigning troops to Rwanda, Haiti, Bosnia, Somalia, under dubious circumstances to do nothing but occupy. It was LBJ's war strategy for purely political image. Clinton loathed the military (what would you expect from a draft-dodger) and succeeded in decimating US national security.

Al is a silly little man with silly little ideas and a stoopid face. Other than that he is useless.

He'd fail because he has no class. If you are going to argue/debate/discuss politics seriously, you must have a modicum of respect for the opposition. Limbaugh has been nothing if not respectful to individuals he encounters in person, regardless of their affiliation. He actually endured an encounter with Hillary!

Clinton squandered the military's money playing in places like Bosnia and Somalia instead of using that money to pay soldiers and buy equipment.

I think I remember reading that Franken also insulted Alan Colmes. Franken's problem is that he has the intellectual depth of my Yorkies, that is he has what he thinks of as convictions (but are really unexamined feelings), but no information, no sense of history and no principles.

What ever happened to this Al Franken radio show that was supposed to be so popular? Did it ever get off the ground? I live in Boston so this would be a natural place for it. If a liberal talk show can't make it in Boston, it probably can't make it anywhere. (Conservative talk radio rules even in Boston where we have local hosts like Jay Severin, Howie Carr and David Brudnoy.)

How about Reagan's B-1 that delivered the coup de grace in Baghdad's al-Mansur district on April 7? You may remember that President Carter almost killed the B-1, but Reagan rescued it.

I remember quite well that during the Clinton years, when the phoney economy was booming, Dems would often ask that the GOP talking heads at least give Bubba his props for that. Most times the talking heads would reply that the only reason the economy was soaring was because the GOP controlled both houses of congress.

With control, came congressional oversight powers, which the GOP failed to use as we were all too busy getting drunk on Dr.Koop's $180 a share exlixer.

Both parties (and our individual greed as well) were complicit in the great American swindle of the 90's. The GOP attempting to dis-own any responsibility for the 90's economy is ridiculous.

The only thing you need to know about Franken's ability as a presenter is that he worked on SNL for 20 years, and when he asked to be the "Weekend Update" fake news anchor, they turned him down because they thought he would bore the audience to tears with his monotonous, flat delivery.

In a fit of pique he quit, and no one at SNL tried to keep him.

Whether or not the tired ideas of democratic socialism can be a hit on the radio is a separate question from whether Franken has any ability to be the spokesman for anything.
