Could there be hope, or is it all just the sound of money? Sound of money is more like it. Let's not forget: these people are entertainers - you know the ones who used to be held in the lowest regard (still are) in society.
The business of Hollywood is the marketing of abstract products - movies. Once the consumer stops buying this industry is doomed. No two ways about it. However, since most of the entertainment cash is coming in from outside of the US these days (junk films mostly), Hollywood is pandering to the baser instincts there and neglecting its base here. The future? Not looking too bright esp. for American entertainment.

Thought I read that because of the war Tom Hanks and Nicole Kidman would not attend this evening.

Just what the troops need, to see Michael Moore winning an Oscar (a certainty) for an anti-2nd Amendment propaganda piece, then taking the stage and calling the Commander-in-Chief and our troops terrorists to wild applause (like he did last night).
Props!
Boy did you nearly nail that one. Applause aside, of course. I think the celebs want their money.

"Come on loyal Freepers, begin the ad homenien attacks"
Pot calling the kettle black. Libs use ad hominems on a frequent basis. They also employ this tactic often; accuse someone of doing the very reprehensible thing you do yourself, to put them on the defensive and deflect attention from your own actions. It's like playing the race card; great to do if one is himself a racist. Don't dignify it with a response; he's baiting you. The taunt itself is an ad hominem.

I read it too. I was therefore surprised to see Kidman.
To: Clemenza
I agree with that -- Kidman should have won last year! What a wonderful acceptance speech.

i've spent a very long, very tense day and i don't need the idiots in hollywood telling me how wrong we - meaning the us of a and our fine military - are in dealing with these animals...and who wants to bet that they never mention our soldiers who were slaughtered today by this animals.... Exactly...the idea that these liberal flakes put on this pious and smug air like they are taking the moral high ground is just so phoney.
When did they ever protest the atrocites of Saddam or any other murdering dictator? Yet they protest us doing the right thing in taking out this monster.
They are hypocrites.

She was very sincere. Seemed like she wanted to say more, but was...guarded. Really teary, and asked for prayers for the families.
To: truthkeeper
I like the part also where she said she always wanted her Mother to be proud of her! She was shocked she won and the tears flowed -- thought her prayers for the families of 9/11 and the Gulf War was very appropriate!

I could relate. Don't we all want our mothers - and daughters - to be proud of us?

Peter O'Toole. Lawrence and King Henry. Nuff said.
I still prefer Richard Harris as the King.

We sure do! Nice to see someone genuinely touched!

His music is much better then the crusty and old Bono or Simon. My girlfriend started fighting with me when I said that, she's a liberal. The guy just oozes talent, that's for sure, but I don't like how easily expressions of cruelty flow from him (particularly the infamous tracks in which his alter ego kills the mother of his child and rapes his mother out of anger). "Lose Yourself" is a completely different type of Eminem song, outside of the violent, paranoid world of Slim Shady, instead touching on the universal theme of trying to capitalize on the chance you've always dreamed of, blowing it, and getting yet one more. Even a non-fan like myself feels my pulse racing as "Lose Yourself" builds to a climax.

I agree - they did the low pan of the front three rows.
Speaking of blowhards, Barbra looked like death on a cracker. So arrogant, is she.
