An A-10 'Warthog' is an aircraft used for supporting ground troops with bombs and a very powerful cannon on the nose that is capable of destroying enemy armor and fixed positions.
Their use means that there is a serious ground-fight going on somewhere near Basra.
See this link to the description of this aircraft at the U.S. Air Force museum.

The 332d is also the unit known as the Tuskegee Airman back in WWII...

An A-10 Warthog is the ugliest airplane in the world. It is built around a rapid-fire 30mm cannon that fires depleted uranium shells. It flies low and slow, can loiter for hours, can take punishment, and is used primarily as a close air support aircraft. The Air Force brass hates them (not enough glitz) but the grunts on the ground love 'em.

Cool. Thanks for the historical reference.

This is the A-10 Thunderbolt, nicknamed the Warthog. It's an anti-armor attack aircraft.

The Warthog was
the most impressive thing I saw at a recent Blue Angels airshow that showed off several military aircraft. What an incredible weapon. They did simulated attack runs, etc. You just can't believe the capability and the incrediblly quiet operation of this aircraft until you see one. Awesome.
