An A-10 'Warthog' is an aircraft used for supporting ground troops with bombs and a very powerful cannon on the nose that is capable of destroying enemy armor and fixed positions.
Their use means that there is a serious ground-fight going on somewhere near Basra.
See this link to the description of this aircraft at the U.S. Air Force museum.

An A-10 Warthog is the ugliest airplane in the world. It is built around a rapid-fire 30mm cannon that fires depleted uranium shells. It flies low and slow, can loiter for hours, can take punishment, and is used primarily as a close air support aircraft. The Air Force brass hates them (not enough glitz) but the grunts on the ground love 'em.

This is the A-10 Thunderbolt, nicknamed the Warthog. It's an anti-armor attack aircraft.

The Warthog was
the most impressive thing I saw at a recent Blue Angels airshow that showed off several military aircraft. What an incredible weapon. They did simulated attack runs, etc. You just can't believe the capability and the incrediblly quiet operation of this aircraft until you see one. Awesome.

Oh, keep channel-surfing while all the war/Iraq Theater coverage is going on...
surely some of the networks will air the stock video footage of an A-10's
cannon simply splattering a tank (older Soviet issue) during the usual "low and slow"
fly-by. (this was a demostration, not a real combat video, I think)

What's an A-10? Just about the last thing that those Iraqis want to see. Next to the Daisy Cutters, it was the most fearsome thing around during Gulf War I.
Remember the carnage on the "Highway of Death" leading north out of Kuwait City? All those burned-out, smoldering Iraqi tanks and trucks were the A-10's calling card.
Here's a recent artist's conception:
Cue the AC/DC (cranked up loud): Thunderstruck!

The A-10 is a close support aircraft. It is a relatively slow jet that can carry about 8 Maverick missiles and carries one hell of a machine gun that can split a tank right up the middle.

The Warthog can deliver ordinance head skyward and be back on target in 21 seconds. Just in case anyone survived and are trying to run. Awesome
