KC Radio Stations Dump Dixie Chicks
Yahoo! News ^ | March 14, 2003

If you tuned in to any of Kansas City's country music stations Thursday, you did not hear the Dixie Chicks.

Several stations in town have dumped the group's music over the lead singer's controversial comments about President Bush, KMBC's Jeremy Hubbard reported.

At a concert in London earlier this week, Natalie Maines, the band's lead singer said, " Just so you know, we're ashamed the president of the United States is from Texas."

The Guardian, a London paper that reported the comment, said Maines' remark got the crowd cheering.

Many local residents, however, were not excited about the singer's point of view.

"If you guys play another Dixie Chicks song, we'll never listen to you again," one country music fan told KBEQ.

The station logged nearly 700 phone calls Thursday, denouncing Maines' comment.

The reactions from listeners were enough for programmers at all three big Kansas City country radio stations to pull the Dixie Chicks from their playlists, Hubbard reported.

But some Dixie Chicks fans didn't appreciate the ban.

"There are some artists that I like that have said things I don't agree with, but it doesn't stop me from listening to their music," said radio listener Shawn Peterson.

One radio station is even taking the boycott a step further.

Friday morning, one local station will take the ban a step further. They have invited their listeners to come to the station's studios and dump their Dixie Chicks CDs in a big trash can, Hubbard said.

The Dixie Chicks are scheduled to play to a sold out crowd in Kansas City next month.

Yeah ... and there's another story already about Clear Channel in San Antonio - the program director heard about the statement and pulled their music. He said the response so far has been 99% approve of the move.

Supposedly, there is a concert planned for San Antonio - guess that will prove interesting.

Oh BTW make sure you keep you kids exposed to their peers through church, little league, etc. If I hadn't been fortunate enough to have my kids in a public but middle-class active parents school I would have figured out something else. I have seen some cases of homeschooling backfire when a kid is overwhelmed by exposure of college. But if you do it right they'll be fine. Good Luck

here's the reply I got from my favorite radio station, 99.5 the Wolf in DFW area:

Hi there!! Thanks so much for your thoughts of yesterday...I think "disgraceful" is a very appropriate word to describe the Natalie Maines fiasco, and I also believe "moronic" is a good word to describe her personal attack on our president.

You will be happy to know that the Dixie Chicks have been pulled from the Wolf playlist - but you will be hearing a lot more "Have You Forgotten!"

Thank you for listening!

Hmmm ... there are still DC songs listed on their playlist on their web site, WITH links to purchase them. I hope this guy isn't shining you on.

Great reply letter. I'm glad your favorite station didn't let you down. I'm still bummed that one of my favorite stations played Mellencamp's anti-Bush song.

The local TV stations here in Nashville finally covered the story and were fairly even handed.

They even mentioned her comments about Toby Keith a few months.

If your tickets are being delivered by mail, and you have not received them yet, when you do, mark "return to Sender" on the envelope and send it back. Then notify your credit card company that you never received the tickets, and have them remove the charge from your account. If you have already received the tickets by mail, you can do the same thing as long as you didn't have to sign for the tickets.

Note that this is still fraud...

Well, you can always take the third option, and just have the credit card reverse the charges because they are no longer worth what you paid for them... It might be harder to justify, but maybe not.

If you purchased tickets before this happened and now don't want to attend, I don't think you should be penalized by the ticket vendor's no-return policy. If you get your money back and don't use the tickets, seems like no harm, no foul. The venue can resell the tickets (if anyone will buy them). I am loath to suggest anything questionable, but I have no problems with this.

Thanks for the links MarMema. You're right on target, as usual. I only have one CD and I love it... :( But I sent my email disapproval of the Dixie Twit's offensive remark.

Would that be Sinead "f" the Pope O'connor?

K.D. Lang was a country singer who was hot in 1990. She had it made. Then she made a T.V. commercial urging people not to eat beef, She was shown hugging a holstein cow, saying I dont eat meat, neither should you.(paraphrasing)
2 dj's somewhere picked it up and it went nation wide. A month later she was history. Apparently the Cxxxxx dont remember, country fans do.

Keep the tickets and stay home. Playing to an empty house is it's own message.

The Dixie Chicks are scheduled to play to a sold out crowd in Kansas City next month.

DIXIE CHICKS MUSIC PULLED FROM THE AIR SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS!!
KUPL (portland, or)

Program Director Cary Rolfe has issued the following statement regarding the Dixie Chicks on 98-7 KUPL..."many of you have called and emailed your opinions regarding the recent statement made by Natalie Maines of the Dixie Chicks. While KUPL hopes for a peaceful resolution to the Iraq conflict, we do support our President and military personnel, therefore we will no longer play Dixie Chicks music until the situation is resolved to our satisfaction." Natalie Maines of the Dixie Chicks has issued this statement " As a concerned American citizen, I apologize to President Bush because my remark was disrespectful. I feel that whoever holds that office should be treated with the utmost respect. We are currently in Europe and witnessing a huge anti-American sentiment as result of the perceived rush to war. While war may remain a viable option, as a mother, I just want to see every possible alternative exhausted before children and American soldiers' lives are lost. I love my country. I am a proud American." KUPL welcomes your opinion on the request lines at (503) 733-5000 or (800) 533-K-U-P-L. Send us an email at kuplwebmaster@kupl.com. KUPL values your input!

I just noticed something on the little booklet that comes with their latest CD, "Home."

When you open up the CD cover, on the right side you see the CD, and on the left side, you see printed on the booklet, "We are changing the way we do business."

Spookey, huh?
