I've done some work in several prisons and the word on the inside is that pedophiles/child molesters are considered to be the lowest lifeform in prison.
Mitchell will be living his worst nightmare, but there will be no escape from it.

This poor girl, so this likely means she was sexually assaulted--damn shame! I was hoping for her sake that the creep didn't do that but it looks like he did.

Elizabeth was married in a bizarre religious ceremony to the drifter with whom she was found Wednesday. I don't understand why so many folks are getting all worked up about Elizabeth "marrying" her abductor. The article clearly states that it was some kind of bizarre religious ceremony, not a legal marriage.
I sure hope this information is wrong, though. That poor girl.

Saw it to. What I don't understand, is Mr. Ed Smart's strange press conference yesterday.
Miracle, praising God, no mention of poor police investigation, or the criminal who took daughter, but goes on a tirade about Rebuplican Chairman from WI for not getting a stand alone law,
I think "MEGANS" Alert whatever it is called.
Police who first speak to girl say, girl says - she is not the missing girl, worried about her captors, dad say she is brainwashed, not asking questions about her months missing.
Something is missing since this girl has been located and I remember months of full blown press hunting for her, what more can a law give, yet this girl was in their own backyard.
This business of blaming a Republican in WI for not getting a stand alone law passed as cause of all this ??????????

She did not want to leave them. I don't find that surprising at all. She was a 14-yr-old child when taken and she was utterly dependent on them both for her needs. She's from a warm, caring family where she has been taught to care for others. And if this guy did claim his "conjugal" rights with her, even though I consider that a rape, the Bible makes clear that its a bond that has a spiritual dimension--she cannot help that this creep has been a part of her. I've known several young women who were date-raped and then spent years trying to establish a relationship with the perp. Sad, but true.

But I dont think that explains why Elizabeth stayed for so long with ample opportunity for escape.

Cal, when a newbie comes on FR and outright accuses a Poster who has been a part of this forum for YEARS, of being a liberal, then maybe you can understand why their sign on date "impunes them". THIS is not rocket science.
FACT: Know who you are posting too..

It is a prevelant attitude in Utah. I believe that this in conjunction with a dismissive attitude towards polygamy is a recipee for disaster. There was a show on polygamy on A&E last week and they flat out asked the governor why arrests aren't being made. They need to at least arrest the pedophiles "marrying" 13-15 year old girls. It's one thing if some pathetic 30-40 year olds want to share a husband but the pedophiles are getting away with rape.

Hopefully Mitchells other wife will be subjected to the same type of 'broom handle' punishment by inmates that is reserved for pedophiles

But I dont think that explains why Elizabeth stayed for so long with ample opportunity for escape. It bothers me that she could have easily escaped many times, she was out in plain sight even questioned by police. I hope I'm raising my own kids to be smart and undocile enough that they would escape --even with less opportunity. There were times she could have yelled out or ran off and would have been saved but apparently didn't choose to do that and stayed with her captors.

You asked a good question..."what the hell is going on here...snip...and nobody investigates?
Let's take a walk down memory lane...
Kidnapper Didn't Know Sister Was Awake Tuesday, June 18, 2002 Fox News
SALT LAKE CITY The gunman who kidnapped 14-year-old Elizabeth Smart did not know that the girl's 9-year-old sister was awake at the time of the abduction, police said Tuesday.
Mary Katherine Smart saw the gunman twice, in different parts of the house, and witnessed the gunman warning her older sister not to speak, Police Sgt. Scott Atkinson said. He said the gunman was not aware that he was seen.
Although it was earlier reported that Mary Katherine had been warned to remain quiet, police who interviewed the youngster three times now say the kidnapper did not speak to the child. The 9-year-old waited two hours before alerting her parents of the kidnapping.
The young girl apparently kept quiet because of something the kidnapper said to Elizabeth, Atkinson said.
Elizabeth was taken by gunpoint two weeks ago from the queen-sized bed she shared with her sister in their parents' Federal Heights home.
Atkinson said the kidnapper remained calm throughout the abduction and told Elizabeth to grab some shoes as he left with her.
"We believe this man may be a trusted person in the neighborhood or community," he said. He said Mary Katherine's account changed as investigators skilled at interviewing children helped jog her memory.
"I don't believe that she's changed her story," Atkinson said.
Police reiterated their description of their suspect: A white man, 30 to 40 years old, 5-foot-8 to 5-foot-10, medium build, with dark hair and hair on his arms and back of his hands. He was wearing tan pants, a Polo brand shirt, dark shoes, a lighter jacket and an "English-style" driving hat. He held a small, dark handgun.
"He spoke nicely and dressed nicely," Atkinson said. He held up a pair of white canvas tennis shoes identical to the ones the kidnapper allowed Elizabeth to take with her. They were Ralph Lauren brand shoes with dark stripes and thick soles.
What to believe? .

How many women stay in abusive relationships? Husbands beat them and abuse them and often times even their children. Yet, the wife often times won't press charges and remains in the marriage. How many children are molested by strangers, family and friends and never tell a soul? What happens to someone's mind when they are raped, kidnapped and isolated for months?
Elizabeth was an innocent. I am sure she felt guilty after a while for having "given in" to their demands. She did what she thought she had to do to survive.

Elizabeth's quote to the police who finally found her at the rest stop (with her heart practically beating out of her T-Shirt)
'You don't think I'm that Elizabeth Smart girl ***who ran away*** do you'
I believe Elizabeth is telling us quite clearly what happened..

In fact, it seems that some of these techniques have been used in governor's schools. While they don't tie kids up or deprive them physically, they do keep them away from parents and friends and chip away at their old belief system, rebuilding it into what the controllers want their subjects to believe. The Gov. School in Arkansas had some subsequent suicides from otherwise normal kids.

It makes her captors more culpable, that's what it does.
Whatever Beetlejuice bride scenario Mitchell and Barzee cooked up, it's not an actual marriage, for G*s sake.
