McDonald's, the fast food giant accused by critics of selling unhealthy food high in fat, is to put fresh fruit on its menu for the first time.
Sliced apples and grapes will be sold from next month in Britain, where the new range is being launched.
McDonald's said yesterday its "new tastes" menu, which will include pasta salad and the Robinsons Fruit Shoot drink with "no added sugar", was an attempt to give customers more choice.
The firm, which recently announced its first loss, said the 59p bagged fruit would provide the equivalent of one of the recommended five daily portions of fruit and vegetables.
However, the announcement drew a sceptical response from parent groups and nutritionists, who said that Fruit Shoot contained just nine per cent juice and had added sweeteners, colouring and preservatives.
Jeanette Longfield, of Sustain, the food and farming alliance, said: "The critical thing is how McDonald's will sell it."
Annie Seeley, co-ordinator of Parent's Jury, a group of 1,500 mothers and fathers, said of Robinsons Fruit Shoot: "Parents feel it is misleading to call a juice drink as such when the amount of juice is so low."
McDonald's insisted that it would promote the new menu well.

I doubt this will be enough to save McDonalds; they've become terribly out of date.
"Fresh fruit not good enough for you?!?"

If I'm going to go to MacDonalds I want a Big Mac, fries and a McFlurry.
If I want fruit I'll save myself the cheap plastic seating and flourescent lighting and stay at home!

If I want fruit I'll save myself the cheap plastic seating and flourescent lighting and stay at home! Now if they'd just have the famous Cuban/ Latin American fried plantains (with all the grease) I'd be happy. I look after my health, not McDonald's.

Sliced apples and grapes? YUCK! I'll stick to my breakfast burrito, thankyouverymuch!
Now, if they ever want to provide a mix of melons, strawberries and pineapple, I'll gladly haunt their drive-thru daily!

Trouble with fresh fruit is that something will have to be added to keep it from turning brown. These additives are not always safe.

They have a fruit and yogurt parfait that is fantastic. I practically live on those things.

I assure you, McDonalds' definition of fresh fruit and mine are quite different.

My daughter loves that, too. I keep thinking I'll have to try it. About the only time I stop there is in the a.m. for the breakfast burrito, or an egg mc'muffin.

Good Lord, Urban Outfitters invades fast food. Democrats would probably like Urban Outfitters ... Republicans would probably like Banana Republic. Actually I don't care what they wear, I love fried plantains. Why eat fruit unless you can fry it? You know?

I love fried plantainsWhats a plantain ? Am I missing something ?
To: MadIvan
and the Robinsons Fruit Shoot drink with "no added sugar" Food-labeling FYI: A bunch of food and drink products are adding highly concentrated "grape juice" to their products which has been processed to remove the flavor and concentrate the natural sweetness (from fructose, a form of sugar), to the point of qualifying as almost pure syrup. They do this so they can sweeten their products while technically being able to still claim, "no added sugar" or "all natural" on the label, or list "grape juice/fruit juice" on their list of ingredients without saying "sugar", even though that's pretty much all it is.
For example, many flavors of "Odwalla Bar", a "health food" nutrition bar, list "Grape juice concentrate" as their *first* ingedient (meaning it has more of that ingredient than any other on the list). Imagine the backlash if they honestly listed "sugar" as their primary ingredient.

This must be dangerous for a diabetic who doesnt know this.

Whats a plantain ? Am I missing something ? It's a variety of banana, which is rather hard (like an eggplant) instead of soft like the usual "munching" variety.
They're just the right consistency after frying, whereas an ordinary banana would end up too mushy.
