Actor George Clooney frustrated by U.S. war drive

BERLIN, Feb 23 (Reuters) - American actor George Clooney stepped up his criticism of George W. Bush's administration on Sunday, saying he feared a war against Iraq was inevitable but would ultimately only lead to more violence.

"America's policies frustrate me," Clooney said in a German television programme. "I think a war against Iraq is as unavoidable as it senseless. I think it's coming. But I also think the real danger is going to be what happens after it."

Clooney, who in interviews with European newspapers has accused Bush of war-mongering over Iraq, is on a growing list of Hollywood celebrities to speak out against war. Others include Sean Penn, Ed Harris, Dustin Hoffman, Madonna and director Spike Lee.

"You can't beat your enemy anymore through wars; instead you create an entire generation of people revenge-seeking," Clooney said in the ARD television programme "Beckmann".

"These days it only matters who's in charge," Clooney said. "Right now that's us -- for a while at least. Our opponents are going to resort to car bombs and suicide attacks because they have no other way to win."

Clooney, 41, said Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld was making a mistake to think a war against Iraq would be an easy win for the United States.

"I believe he thinks this is a war that can be won, but there is no such thing anymore," said Clooney, who starred in a film about the 1991 Gulf War "Three Kings" that took a dark look at the war to drive Iraq out of Kuwait.

"We can't beat anyone anymore," added Clooney, who has called it unfair that Americans opposed to war are being branded unpatriotic.

Clooney, who won fame for his leading role in long-running hospital drama "ER", has also appeared in films including "Batman and Robin", "The Perfect Storm" and "Brother Where Art Thou?".

"In Cloony's defense, if his objection to the war is that war no longer works, I wouldn't call that AntiAmerican or unpatriotic. It might be misguided and wrong, but that type of opposition, I can handle."

I was going to post a similar thought, and you are right, the problem is where was Clooney when Clinton was going to invade Haiti, or when he launched missles into Iraq, or during the bombing of Serbia? Isn't it fuuny that the Hollywood types only seem to speak up when a Republican is in office? I would love to be able to find Looney Clooney's pontifications during those flareups. Anybody got any sources?

"I would like to know why the media even gives these people the time of day"

What better way to get ratings than an American actor, condemning America?

Come on American TV to say that, George. All these idiots go overseas to mouth this propaganda and don't have the guts to say it here.

I gained new respect for Brad Pitt a few years ago when a giggling reportette shoved a lens and a mike in his face and solicited his opinion on some weighty world issue. His response was “Why are you asking ME? I’m just a F**KING ACTOR!”

Putting aside the conspicuous fact that Ronald Reagan (who, however, devoted a large portion of his life to actually STUDYING ISSUES) was also just an actor, Pitt’s advice should probably be tattooed on the inside of every actors’ eyelids and be removed ONLY after they, like Reagan, have proven that they have investigated ALL elements of a problem.

As much as I hate to say so, I share Clooney’s concerns about the POST-SADDAM period in a fiercely tribal muslim middle-eastern nation. A protracted US occupation could be a MAJOR cluster-f**k and make the events of 9-11 look like a warm-up exercise.

We’ll ALL know a lot more about the how the post-war period will go by how our military leaders handle Baghdad: If we simply surround it and let those who will come out and surrender – the INTELLIGENT solution – we may be OK. If, however, we go street-to-street, house-to-house, the body bags will start filling the lockers at Dover AFB and we’ll be in for a very bad time – there AND HERE!

Clooney, who in interviews with European newspapers has accused Bush of war-mongering over Iraq...

It's one thing to debate American policy "in America" but it is borderline treasonous to do it in Europe. What a scum!

Liberals like George Clooney have every right to make fools of themselves in public and it would appear, Georgie Porgie is at the top of the list of Hollyweird fools.

Anyone who takes seriously, the rants of people like Ed Harris, Jeanne Garofalo, Mike Farrell, Sean Penn and Martin Sheen, should have their head examined. These people are liberals and socialists to the core, and like Jimmah Carter and Bill Clinton, these entertainers have no idea what it takes to properly govern the domestic and foreign policy of the USA.

Notice how -we- can't beat anyone another more, but our enemies can? Notice how we are supposed to give up and just enjoy being pummelled, and our enemies are never in danger of creating an "entire generation" of revenge seeking -Americans- out for -their- hides? The man obviously can't think.

He's obviously had too many movie roles portraying him as some kind of super duper military and/or secret agent man...he believes he IS one now.

The number of functioning brain cells in Cloonie's swollen head can probably be counted on one finger.
