Iraq’s Most Persecuted People

Nashville is home to one of the largest Kurdish communities in the United States. Nearly 7,000 Kurds have settled there, starting their own businesses, becoming U.S. citizens.

CBN.com – NASHVILLE — As the national debate intensifies over war with Iraq, Bush officials point to appeals from within Iraq's own borders to overthrow Saddam Hussein. Among the most strident voices are the Iraqi Kurds. Many Kurdish immigrants who found refuge in America paint a grisly picture of the dictator of Iraq, and now they are going public.
In making the moral case to disarm Saddam Hussein, President Bush often cites the plight of Iraq’s Kurds. In his State of the Union speech, Bush said, "The dictator assembling the world's most dangerous weapons has already used them on entire villages, leaving thousands of his own citizens dead, blind or disfigured."

About five million Kurds live in northern Iraq in an area they call Kurdistan, the region partitioned after World War I among Turkey, Syria, Iran, and Iraq.

Iraq's Kurds say they are a people without a country, and for decades, they have been victims of ethnic cleansing by Saddam Hussein. Kurds say, in Saddam’s genocidal campaign, he razed 4,000 Kurdish villages and killed tens of thousands of Kurdish civilians.

The most grisly incident came in 1988 when Saddam unleashed chemical weapons on Halabja, leaving 5,000 Kurds dead. Most of them were women and children.

Mohammed Aziz, a survivor Halabja, said, "Sadaam is a ruthless dictator, he is savage and he should not remain on the face of this planet."

Fifteen members of Aziz’s family died in that attack. He recalls the "smell of rotten apples" as Saddam's warplanes bombed his village with chemical bombs.

A translator described what Aziz saw. "He saw the children to vomit and their eyes went red… and he started seeing them…and disfigured. He saw many people burned as a result, he believes, of mustard gas, and VX. He saw people who lost legs, arms, organs of their body, and this was the saddest part according to him because he himself was so devastated, couldn't help."

Aziz escaped to America, but today suffers kidney and heart damage, and he is awaiting a lung transplant.

Since the end of the Persian Gulf War, patrols of U.S. and British fighter jets in Iraq's northern no-fly-zone have given the Kurds some protection. But those who were able escape Saddam's reach have done so, and many have fled to America.

Isa Tayip says from childhood he lived in mortal fear of Saddam's soldiers. "How would you feel if you were 15 years old as a teenager, running for your life and there are chemical and biological weapons chasing you?" he asked. "I was 12 years old, one time, and I was shot at by Saddam's troops. I was 12 years old. I didn't do nothing wrong, playing in the yard."

Tayip continued, "I still remember when he dynamited our houses and bulldozers came in, he even concreted the water to show that no human life was here."

Tayip managed to escape through Turkey, but not before Iraqi forces captured his friends and family. "There was 42 men between the ages of 14 and 50, and they were lined up. There was a mass execution right in front of their parents, kids, their mothers," he said.

Tayip continued, "I have a relative who lives in Canada, he lost two brothers. His mother died on the spot, because when she saw two of her sons get killed in front of her she had a heart attack and died on the spot. Another of my relative had sons, and he begged and got on his knees and kissed their shoes not to kill his younger sons; and they killed all three sons in front of them."

"Saddam is a beast," said Isamael Rozi, a Kurd who refused to serve in Saddam's army after witnessing firsthand the dictator's ruthless deeds. "For a year I was one of the freedom fighters fighting against Saddam. So many hundreds of people have gotten killed, and I have seen them."

Rozi said, "The way he treated his own people, and for years and years since he came in control till now, he's killing his own citizens. There is no language in this world you can use to describe in a bad way, because of his actions against his own people, using chemical and biological weapons."

Tracking the latest events by satellite TV, Kurds in Nashville fear without American intervention, the fate of Iraq's Kurds is sealed.

Kurdish refugee Dr. Kirmanj Gundi said, "If he stays in power, he will continue the policy of genocide against our people. If he again has a free hand, this time our misery would be much more greater and we face a certain, certain demise."

Even if U.S. forces do move in, Kurds expect ruthless retaliation.

Saeed Chalky lost 30 relatives to Saddam's campaign of death. "This is the thing we scared of now. If the U.S. goes to war and did not take him in first one or two days, he would use it and he has it, those chemical weapons," he said.

Still, should America go to war in Iraq, Kurds are eager to play a role. Thousands are applying with a U.S. defense contractor that's recruiting Kurdish-Americans to serve as military translators overseas. For Chalky, the job means a $60,000 paycheck and a chance to liberate his homeland.

"Saddam is the enemy of Kurds. Saddam killed many, many Kurds in horrible ways. We want to get rid of him. If we can do anything to help we would be more than happy to do so," Chalky said.

Kurds say their dream for an independent Kurdish state seems unlikely for now, with both the U.S. and Great Britain determined to keep Iraq intact. But for the chance to govern themselves, and for freedom from oppression, they are telling their stories to convince Americans that Saddam is a danger, and he must go.

Tayip said, "I tell them him how brutal and ruthless, how his regime and Saddam himself, how brutal he is, and they understand because people don't know. People don't know what this guy did!"

Rozi agreed, "He's not even a human being. He doesn't have any humanity in his heart. He is capable to kill his own family, he killed two of his son-in-laws, so imagine what he is capable of."

Dr. Gundi said, "I sincerely hope America and other western countries would stop Saddam Hussein. He is not just a threat to us, but to the region, and he is a menace to American interests in the region."

The day Saddam Hussein is removed from power, these Kurds say, will be a day of hope for their next generation.

Kurdish leaders are protesting a demand by Turkey to send thousands of troops into northern Iraq. Turkish officials contend Kurdish aggression in Iraq could destabilize Turkey's own Kurdish population. But Kurdish leaders fear Turkish troops would seize control of the oil-region of Kirkuk, and further oppress the Kurdish population
