[history]
February 19, 2003 -- WASHINGTON - Saddam Hussein plans to use chemical weapons to create a ring of death around Baghdad to slow down a U.S. invasion and turn the city's residents into hostages, a former Iraqi scientist said yesterday.

Saddam really has nothing to lose by firing off that bio/chem arsenal of his, at either our troops or Israeli cities (or both). He's a dead man anyway, so why not go out guns-a-blazing? I'd be very surprised if it went down otherwise.

But according to Blix and the United Nations and France and Germany, Saddam has no chemical weapons. Woe is me! I am so confused . . . not.

We heard it from Dubya's lips......"The war on terrorism is going to be a different kind of war."
No doubt WMD's are part of his analogy.

Saddam really has nothing to lose by firing off that bio/chem arsenal of his, at either our troops or Israeli cities (or both). The catch is, it's not Saddam who has his finger on all the launch buttons -- it's his military commanders. And how many of *them* are going to be willing to incur the wrath of the US, not to mention a lot of the Iraqi populace, by doing "scorched earth" on their *own* country just so Saddam can have one last suicidal gesture?
I suspect that when the end is in sight, Saddam will have very, very few people willing to go out in a blaze of glory with him.
I think the odds are good that as soon as Saddam seals himself in his underground bunker and starts giving "we'll all die together" orders, his army is going to say, "what do you mean 'we'", and pour concrete down the entrance tunnel to his bunker.

Ok, this explains the slow crawl to war. Also somewhat confirms the rumor that U.S. soldiers are in Bagdad and testing the defenses.
Guess this will be an unconventional war - it will be a chess match.

I think you're correct that "this explains the slow crawl to war." As do concerns on the homefront regarding terrorist cells.
The dirty politics directed at the US by several countries is no help either. It's like some global socialist entity (disguised as the UN), against the sovereignty and free will of the USA.
The UN in its present form, will be a deserving casualty in all this.

"And I will point out that some of those generals signed their ballots for Saddam in blood."
But I'd be willing to bet you that it wasn't their idea, nor did they draw their own blood. You can be sure one of the security goons drew it for them, and not nicely.

The catch is, it's not Saddam who has his finger on all the launch buttons -- it's his military commanders. It is possible that Saddam could detonate prepositioned weapons by remote control. Just picture Saddam deep under Baghdad in his nuclear proof bunker. He could have the city over head ringed with chemical and biological WMD. It would be a trivial task to bury remote dentonation lines. Finding the WMD and cutting off his detonation logistics will be a key to keeping civilian casualities within Baghdad low.
Here is the story on the US Army 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiments name
"The words "Brave Rifles" are from the accolade given the Regiment by General Winfield Scott, Commanding General of the Army, for its action at Capultepec during the Mexican War and the gray color of the letters and numerical designation in simulating the color of steel allude to the Regimental Motto "Blood and Steel" which was derived from the same accolade ("Brave Rifles! Veterans! You have been baptized in fire and blood and have come out steel.") "

The ONLY way I see him being able to do that is by holding SOME kind of hostages....!They aren't hostages. They have put themselves in that position voluntarily. Their mistake is that we don't care. A target is a target. You can't see who is next to a target from 20,000 feet above and 500 knots.

I recommend we go in upwind of Baghdad - just in case.
If anything goes off we'll just wait a few days ...
