NEW YORK (AP) _ More than 250 protesters were arrested during Saturday's massive rally against military action in Iraq, police said a day after the demonstration.
Tens of thousands converged on Manhattan's East side for the demonstration, which drew peace activists from around the country. Organizers estimated the crowd at 375,000 to 500,000 people, while police said it had been about 100,000.
A court order prohibited protesters from marching past the United Nations, so the crowd gathered along First Avenue, stretching more than 20 blocks, from 49th to 72nd streets. Protesters spilled onto Second and Third avenues, and many complained that police kept them from crossing barriers to join the main rally.
A total of 257 people were arrested, 199 for disorderly conduct and other minor violations that mostly resulted in tickets to appear in court at a later date, police said.
Five people were arrested on felony charges and 53 on misdemeanor charges; police could not provide details on those crimes.
The Manhattan district attorney did not immediately return calls.
"I think it went well. It was orderly," Police Commissioner Ray Kelly told reporters Saturday. "We facilitated people's ability to make their opinions known."
Donna Lieberman, executive director of the New York Civil Liberties Union, said she had spoken to protesters who said they were arrested and held for hours in buses and vans outside police headquarters without access to food, water or bathrooms.
Police could not immediately comment on the treatment of the arrested protesters.
More than 5,000 police officers were on duty for the protest as law enforcement remained on high alert after recent warnings of a possible terrorist attack.
Eight officers were injured, including a mounted cop who was pulled off his horse and beaten, Kelly said. A horse also suffered injuries when a protester punched its face and pulled it to the ground by its reins, police said. Mid-afternoon Saturday, the department called for its highest level of mobilization.
The cost of the police overtime was estimated at $5 million.

Disgusting! I had no clue this happened until Michael Savage revealed it on his show last night. So much for there not being a "liberal" news bias. I love the way these punks can get away with anything. I'd love to say what I think would have been justified retaliation, but I don't want to get banned from this moderately-PC forum. ;)
We desperately need some pro-American rallies in this country. Unfortunately, all of the good guys are busy working and keeping the capitalist gears a churnin'. Only the welfare bums and government-backed pukes have time for this type of insurrection and disorderliness.

I would like to see Ron Kuby arrested for advocating that the protestors NOT obey the law not to march out of their designated area. I heard him myself on WABC radio last week.

A whole lot 'o hate goin on inside the "peaceniks." Just like all liberals, they are very angry inside. Every once in a while it turns to violence.
To: YOMO
No, they probably won't. The horse will be declared "self-hating" and a "species traitor" for working with humans.

Someone besides the taxpayers need to foot this bill.
That's ridiculous. Five million dollars to keep a bunch of maggot infested dope smokers in line?
I just can't fathom hurting a horse at a "peace" protest.

Hey, these people called NY firemen trying to get to a fire "fascists." It's easy to believe they'd gang up on a cop, and even his horse.

I like your point - how is it that liberals who are supposed to be so loving can say they "hate" Bush? I could understand if they say they disagree with him, but why hate? And they are supposed to be so careful to avoid making fun of people with disabilities but can write books about Rush Limbaugh being fat.

Dear YKC,
While I applaud your sentiment, we have our rallies at the votibg booth. Stay the course. Keep the faith. We will prevail.

And they were trying to. I specifically saw some footage of demonstrators trying to push their way though barricades with the police on the other side.
As far as the horse punching story, I heard that, too. And let me tell you something: If I was the officer on that horse, or I was anywhere near it at the time, I would have pulled out my nightstick and I would have given that son of a bitch a beating that would have made Rodney King's look like a pot-smoking lovefest.
And then arrested whatever was left.

I hope they hang the commie maggot who beat the officer and his beautiful horse (a Morgan, isn't it photogirl?). Does anyone know if they (the officer and horse) are okay? Did they catch the freak/s who did it?

A horse also suffered injuries when a protester punched its face and pulled it to the ground by its reins There was ZERO coverage of this even in the local NYC media. I am stunned. I am in NYC and did not even hear about it. DISGRACE!!!
