I think the're not heading to the Gulf because they know the Iraqi's can out surrender them, and the French don't want to look bad at one of the few things the're world class at.
To: dighton
They are French. They were undoubtedly afraid of getting too close to potential hostilities. They weren't sure they had a white flag big enough for a ship that size.

From there - or from closer to the Gulf - the French vessel could be used to deploy French aircraft the French airplane to join any war on surrender to Iraq.

Haha...
The article comes off like "Awe man, the French arent gonna play".
I say go the hell home and dont come back! Punk!
Haha...my earnest prayer is that the French arent "given" a place in this fight. I am not concerned with what they want...I dont want us to "give" them a spot on the team.

The U.S. Navy has "vessels."
The French Navy has "weassels."

The French are retreating, having realized they are out-manned in the Gulf.

The French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle is returning to France next week, say French officials, apparently scotching suggestions that it might be heading for the Gulf. In other words, the French carrier tucked its figurative tail between its figurative legs and ran.

Let's see, it's half the size of one of our carriers, there's only one of them, and it's full of technical problems. When it hits an ice cube and sinks on it's way home it will be the perfect symbol of French military power alright.
