Colonel Hackworth has lost it!
self

Posted on 02/17/2003 12:53:18 PM PST by steplock

"An army of many who can't cut it: Hackworth says hold off on war while soft troops toughen up" says a older post here.

On Sean Hannity, col hackworth has basically just said that if we cannot guarantee 100% NO casulaties, we are wrong in going to war????

He agrees the chemical suits are 100% better than the lst gulf war, but they are too hot and bulky - the troops don't have anyplace to change (?????) - Iraq is hot - he is demanding a suit that is virtually weightless, built in airconditioning, limitless gas & chemical filtration system --- this does not exist and cannot exist at our level of science (We have DUMBED-DOWN our schools & students so they can't create these).

Col Hackworth - it is time for you to retire. I am afraid that you are suffering from some debilitating mental disease.

And I LOVED Col Hack! not bad for an army officer.

Still waiting for an apology old' Uncle, when you accused me of being anti-Israel and masquerading as a different user. :-)

Can someone confirm or deny the Kurtz-Hack association?

Well, considering that the character was created about 100 years ago (Apocalypse Now was an adaptation of Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad), I think it's safe to say that it was not based on David Hackworth.

After the Hannity segment today, a guy with an actual Army chemical background (which Hackworthless manifestly does not have) politely suggested that Hackworth was all wet. The suits are certainly uncomfortable, but they work. Moreover, he stated that Hackworth's claim that there's "no preparation" for a chemical attack was incorrect.

Who was the expert? Was he on the radio show? Or did you just talk to him yourself or what's the deal? Give us some more of this.

It is not enough to fling baseless accusations. So spell it out

I was just speculating on why Hackworth isn't real gung ho about invading Iraq.

I think it's safe to say that your reasoning is seriously flawed. Re-read your own post and pay particular attention to your use of the word adaptation .

A Google search for Kurtz + Hackworth shows that the idea that Hackworth inspired Kurtz is at least part of the folk lore, if not documented fact.

Don't be too hard on Hack. He paid his dues, did you?

Do 3 Purple Hearts earn me a right to speak?

Proof upon request --- along with an entire page of the rest of them.

After a quick glance over the letter (I didn't read it closely) it appeared to be factually fairly correct.

Did you realize there is NO true 100% defense? There is NO one-filter-fits-all chemicals/biological mask?

Atropine is strong enough, if you did not get a fatal dose of nerve agent, the shot gives you 5 minutes to get the hell outta Dodge! That's all.

There is NO protection made that can be used to lay there in the middle of a field of gas - nerve agents-blood agents-whatever, and continue fighting.

It does not even take anything extremely high tech when it comes to poison gases either --- have a filter to save you from a nerve agent? chlorine gas will eat that filter. How many filters can you carry? How do you know which one you should install (as you are being sprayed)? You can't have all the filters in place - some may be eaten away by the agent and let it all in then.

All these safety devices have a time limit - and that time limit is to be used to get to a nearby safe area to counter-attack.

Chemical & Biological agents are only a high risk in a battlefield for a very short period of time (except in low lying places-foxholes/trenches). The winds, etc will dissapate the effectiveness.

Nuclear? If you must fight in a contaminated zone - the odds of long term survival a very low. So you may as well get out there and take the bad-guys out before you.

I'm sorry for you bleeding hearts out there, but war is hell and people do die. If you are not prepared to put your life on the line to protect your family, your religion and your way of life, you should simply join the the rest of the left-wing radical extremists and bow down to hillary kennedy/carter and company.

Hack said-"He knows what the plan is"-Basically guys through Turkey, Jordan and Kuwait.
Me with no military experience could tell you that much.
Those that know aren't talking.
I was also surprised by his advocacy that we should defeat Iraq through air power alone(like Serbia) and not put any Boots on the ground until after.

It was a caller to Hannity's show. He was from Idaho, IIRC, and he mentioned that he had been in a chemical warfare unit in the Army. The guy pretty much invalidated Hackworth's claims about how well the suits work, and also about the alleged lack of procedure for handling chemical attacks.

I have sent this material around once, about 6 weeks ago, but it went unnoticed in the rush to war.

It's somewhat difficult to trust the objectivity of people who start a scary-sounding report with a talking-points line like this one.

Methinks Dr. Nass has an agenda besides the stated concern over chemsuits.....

The last few times I have heard Hack on local radio I have wondered if he has lost all of his marbles or what!
I think it is time he shut his mouth. His arrogance is appalling, and his ideas are just too weird for words lately.

In my mind, Colonel Hackworth has paid his dues and is more than entitled to his opinion. I may not agree with everything the man has said in the past, but he is the kind of leader I'd want to follow into hell and back if necessary. I talked to Men who served under him in Nam, while I was stationed at Bragg in 1974. In their eyes, the man was Alexander the Great reincarnated.
