"An army of many who can't cut it: Hackworth says hold off on war while soft troops toughen up" says a older post here.
On Sean Hannity, col hackworth has basically just said that if we cannot guarantee 100% NO casulaties, we are wrong in going to war????
He agrees the chemical suits are 100% better than the lst gulf war, but they are too hot and bulky - the troops don't have anyplace to change (?????) - Iraq is hot - he is demanding a suit that is virtually weightless, built in airconditioning, limitless gas & chemical filtration system --- this does not exist and cannot exist at our level of science (We have DUMBED-DOWN our schools & students so they can't create these).
Col Hackworth - it is time for you to retire. I am afraid that you are suffering from some debilitating mental disease.
And I LOVED Col Hack! not bad for an army officer.

These old military men just don't know when to quit, do they? I used to like him, too.

Hackworth's concern about the welfare of the ordinary Grunt seems sincere and fine, but he is going overboard almost to the point of ridiculous scaremongering these days.
He is marginalizing himself and his message every time he speaks it seems.

He is marginalizing himself and his message every time he speaks it seems. What is his "message"? To me it seems like just his self-promotion.

Hackworth has adopted a very urgent, almost desperate, tone and delivery in his opposition to war with Iraq, which bears an eerie resemblance to that of Scott Ritter. It is unbelievable to me that this original hawk could turn so quickly and so completely.

Um, Hack? Ever heard of boats? International mail? Etc.?

The problem is that Hack isn't a soldier anymore, he is someone who considers himself a "celebrity" and as such, needs the limelight.
He is becoming "one-trick pony", only good for criticizing the Petagon and the Army. His world is in the past and he doesn't realize it.

He seems to be looking for an issue to put himself in the spotlight. I appreciate his concern for out men, but he's starting to talk like a grandma.

I've been reading his book about VietNam. It was billed as analogous to
Band of Brothers, but doesn't even come close.
Although not a bad read, it's essentially a self-glorifying treatise, mostly discussing how much better his actions were than the remainder of the military.
I'll admit that the predecessors of his last unit in 'Nam were pretty piss-poor, but it looks to me as if he jumped into a situation where he was an opportunist. By that I mean that his commanding officers knew that the troops he was assigned to lead did not have good leadership before he came aboard, that's why they assigned him. He was assigned to the right place at the right time. He doesn't give any credit to the command who identified the problems and knew they needed to be fixed. He claims all the credit for himself.
He has some good ideas and did a good job, but he's now out of the loop, except for what leaks may make their way to him. If he wants to do our servicemen any good, he will refrain from letting our enemies know anything at all about our capabilities, or lack thereof.

Yep, I doubt you get much press for agreeing with the Bush Administration.

It is unbelievable to me that this original hawk could turn so quickly and so completely.Maybe he sees the war for what it is -- an unnecessary and unjust war to liberate Iraq's oil and doesn't want to see American sons and daughter die to support Wall Street. I like Hack.

I've always found his smarmy, pseudo-sympathetic style irritating. He can't call soldiers "soldiers" -- he HAS to call them "grunts," as if that makes him "one of the guys." Yeah, I know he has a combat record a mile long, but he seems to forget that there has never been a war the U.S. military has been ready for, but it still seems to come out all right in the end.

The problem is that Hack isn't a soldier anymore, he is someone who considers himself a "celebrity" and as such, needs the limelight. Gotta agree. As such "celebrities" go, I have a whole lot more respect for THIS guy:
Especially after he verbally carved up Barbara Streisand, just before the 2002 elections.
To: steplock
I remember a local KSFO radio interview with Hack after 9/11. He gleefully predicted that we'd be dismantling Baghdad by Christmas 2001.
Some enterprising Freeper(s) will surely have to compile a post-Iraq 'Downside legacy' to compare the pre- and post-war comments of the media and political blabberers.
The fools must not be allowed to emerge with their credilibity intact.
