I've got to wonder...how do you properly measure snow during storms with a lot of drifting? How do you know you're getting a 'true' measurement?

I've heard reports of drift up to 4 feet in rural areas but this is the first official measurement.

This is probably of little comfort, but hey, at least it's not rain!

You can get at least reasonably close even with drifting.....if you learn how to do it. I couldn't do it though.

I'm in the far NW corner of PA and we've received 7-8 inches. (we were only suppose to get 3) The roads suck across the NE.....

My guess is that the drifts are higher than 4 feet now.

Precipitation gages such as the U.S. stick gage or the Belfort 5-780 (both have very large openings) can measure snowfall pretty well, but there are new optical systems being tested that utilize lasers to measure snowfall rates. In any case, NOAA is getting a fairly decent estimate.

My parents live in my old hometown of Sabillasville, in the extreme northwest corner of Frederick County, MD. Dad reports heavy snow, high winds, mucho drifting, and it's still coming down. All in all, a good day to stay inside.
He says the snow has all but covered the stone fence across the road. He can only see a few rocks, instead of the usual 10,000.

While this storm is not as intense, it is reminiscent of the February 1978 blizzard that hit New England. Some spots got over 50 inches of snow as the storm spun and spun off the coast, not going much of anywhere for about 36 straight hours. (I think it actually made a loop around Nantucket Island.)
I am home from work now and it has been snowing at the rate of one inch an hour since 10AM here in northern Mass. They say the really heavy stuff won't be here until 6PM. It's going to be a big one!
