March 5th National Student Strike
Books Not Bombs! Stop the War Against Iraq!
The National Youth and Student Peace Coalition (NYSPC) calls upon students on campuses across the United States to join us in a one-day student strike on March 5th, 2003. As students and youth, our futures will be shaped by the actions that the Bush administration takes today. A US attack on Iraq will inevitably:
Endanger the lives of US servicemen and women
Increase the suffering of the Iraqi people while slaughtering thousands of innocent people
Encourage terror attacks against the US around the world and at home
Be used as an excuse to erode civil liberties
Divert resources from education and social services
Subvert historical precedent and international law
As students and youth, the future of this country, we are disturbed by the lack of attention paid to the real needs of Americans, especially education. Financial aid opportunities and family income are rapidly losing ground to the rising cost of higher education. *1 Low-income families are facing decreasing access to education. Student debt is increasing. *2 All while the US military budget steadily increases (12% from 2000 to 2002 *3).
We say NO! to this war of terror to increase American power and take control of strategic oil supplies. Join us in a student strike March 5th to demand:
US Government:
End the drive for military action and economic sanctions that target the people of Iraq
Fund education to ensure that everyone in the US has access to higher education
Re-allocate military funds to eliminating poverty and building peace and home and abroad
Campus Administrators:
Declare opposition to the war
Disclose and eliminate military research contracts
Freeze or lower tuition and fees
Transfer money for JROTC to college preparation and counseling and from ROTC to financial aid
The Bush Administrations war on Iraq is a venture for control of the region and its oil supplies, not national security, democracy, or human rights. ...

There you have it, the future of America is going on strike. Don't know if that means they'll refrain from sleeping late and binge drinking, too, but hey - it's for peace.
We'll see whether this catches on. As a resident of a small college town - where I hear an anti-war movement is underway - I'll be prepared to counterprotest, as necessary.

Well, ya gotta give 'em points for ingenuity on coming up with excuses for skipping class...

A) These are a few leftist Gen X and Y ain't predominantly commies like the boomers were. ANSWER is all the same crowd as the 60's.
B) Whats with the other snide remarks?

Snide remarks? Mentioning binge drinking is a "snide" remark? Given the beer bottles I remove from my yard (thanks to students from two local colleges who congregate at the bar a few blocks away) every weekend, I'd say it's an accurate assessment. Or don't they drink at your school?
To: weikel
Everyone deserves a government provided higher education so that they can protest against the government that provided it. My Kids went to college the good ol fashion way, I paid for it. They have jobs now and are good hard working Republicans. These protesters need Mom and Dad to spank their pimple covered butts and take them out of school. Sounds a lot like Berkley.

Pulling out all the old, stale 70s cliches, aren't they? What a difference it is without a draft...

Too bad I don't have any classes that day. I would give an exam with no make-ups allowed. Any "stiking" students would get a big fat zero as one of their exam scores.

Maybe they should spend a little more time in English class and less time protesting:
Austin, Texas: University of Texas Austin Walkout
Wednesday, February 12th 2003 11:30
UT Austin students and youth will workout of there classes to oppose the war in Iraq at 11:30. We will met at the East Mall and then march.

It will never work; Books require a square barrell with no rifling.

Or don't they drink at your school? Frat parties public drunkeness is rare.

Well, ya gotta give 'em points for ingenuity on coming up with excuses for skipping class... No kidding. In my college days, I would have striked to protest anything, as long as I could skip my 8:00 am Econ class.
To: mountaineer
Their timing may not be too good--by March 5th the war could well be over.
To: mountaineer
How about "More common sense and less stupidity"? I would agree that they do need to do a lot more reading....

As our local news failed to report today: While 1,000 students at UT protested the war...49,000 did NOT.

My wacko college in Chicago passed an "anti-war" resolution (the majority of students did NOT come out against the war, but since when did they care what WE think?) Apparently, whoever wrote this list failed to notice their little rant. Bwahahahahaha. Don't expect me to name which school it is.

These kids are brillant, taught by brillant professors. Let's all send them our money and set at their feet in hopes of getting some crumbs of their great knowledge and wisdom.
Were they all government scools on the list?

I don't think so. I see binge drinking every weekend, between the college kids from my town and the ones from the college 5 miles away who come over here to drink (and fight).

It would be a shame if their strike interfered with spring break (or vice versa).
