Q: Why was the threat level increased on Friday?

A: Law enforcement officials cited intelligence reports that al-Qaeda might be planning to attack ''lightly secured targets'' such as apartment buildings or hotels. Officials also warned of an attack with a ''dirty bomb,'' which spreads radioactive material, or with a chemical or biological agent. They said an attack could be timed to coincide with the hajj, the annual Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca. The climax of the three- to seven-day hajj was Monday.

Probably was the same builder..mine was suppose to have a triplewall flue and only had a doublewall flue. Plus the builder didn't realize that wood was a combustible material...thought you could put a hot flue next to it and it was totally safe and within code. Even heard of some builders using singlewall stovepipe to try to cut costs.

Am I glad I bought those potassium iodine pills. While platic may not protect me from radiation particles KI3 definetly will. But if I put plastic on my windows in the basement along with closing vents ect. wouldn't that prevent poison gas from entering the room I'm in?

I see you are near me. Really good sleeping bags for keeping warm. Plastic bags for waste disposal of the animals. As far as freezing water, if you mean pipes, just keep them slightly dripping. I think if we have to turn off our ventilation system, I'm not too worried about my pipes bursting.

America has projected abroad so much and left our own unprotected!

What do you think the National Guard is for? There are units in every state and ready to move when needed.

I really don't know. It's not my field of expertise. I would assume it depends on how well the vents are sealed and how long you could last in a situation with absolutely no air flow as you waited for the chemicals to dissipate.

I wonder if those underground bunkers they used to sell in the fifties have been modified for chemical and biological attacks? Or were they an entirely closed system already?

Use the plastic and tape to seal off doors and windows. This will help prevent lethal agents from seeping into your home.

the "arkie/fema" legacy of james lee witt & buddy young lives on: duct tape & drop cloths.

for added protection, be sure to set a couple old washin machines & a refrigerator on the front porch.

AFTER they say it's 'safe' to come out, HOW do you go about cleaning/'debugging' your house if any of that crap has filtered in?

That would depend on the agent so I imagine we'd be given instructions on how to clean up.

I keep some bleach and some lysol (the concentrated disinfectant, not the cleaner)since most things can be killed with those. A solution of 1 part bleach and 9 parts water will kill most bacteria and viruses. If the stuff is weaponized, that may not be true. I think lysol will kill almost anything, too; but I'd bet they would tell us to increase the concentration. The main thing is to have some on hand so you can mix it however they tell you to. And have some latex gloves to protect your hands when you work with it.

Also, when I worked in the hospital, I used to spray my scrubs and jackets (even colored ones) with the lysol spray from a can when I got off work to keep from carrying anything home to my family. It never harmed the material or faded the colors at all. But, again, I have no idea if it would be effective on something that was weaponized. And we already know that none of that stuff is effective on the anthrax.

too bad ol NDCORUP (RIP) is not around to add to fema's impressive list of "homeland security" devices.

of course what you'd prolly expect from him is:
1. build an earth bermed bunker for a house.
2. stockpile plenty of ammo (and a few ceegars).
3. move a few old cars out front to block the field of fire.

on further thought, ND might have included something like this in his survival kit:

School bus bodies are great multi-purpose accessories for your survival bunker. Double as Chicken Coops until the balloon goes up!

the wisdom of the Ozarks speaks for himself.

Heck, as bad as the power is where I live, I've got to be ready to go several days without juice, so I have a kerosene heater and plenty of kerosene. As a red-blooded American male, I have plenty of duct tape, I've got plastic sheeting from all the painting projects that my wife wants me to do but I never get around to, I've got plenty of food, I get large jugs of spring water from a local spring and I ALWAYS make sure I have at least two cases of beer on hand. Eat your heart out, FEMA.

Of course all the duct tape in the world won't protect you from an electromagnetic bomb....one that takes out batteries and computers. You have to have good sneakers and smoke signals.

Meanwhile, we have Gaia loving, Canadian drop-out Maurice Strong enflaming the North Koreans as our special envoy. The same Maurice Strong who led a conference in Brazil to reduce population in the USA.
