Q: Why was the threat level increased on Friday?
A: Law enforcement officials cited intelligence reports that al-Qaeda might be planning to attack ''lightly secured targets'' such as apartment buildings or hotels. Officials also warned of an attack with a ''dirty bomb,'' which spreads radioactive material, or with a chemical or biological agent. They said an attack could be timed to coincide with the hajj, the annual Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca. The climax of the three- to seven-day hajj was Monday.

I don't feel so dumb about buying a gask mask last year. Perhaps they should update those corny duck and cover videos.

Full face respirator,
with HEPA/Chlorine cartridges, hooded Tyvek suit, rubber gloves, rubber overboots, and duct tape seems reasonable to me. Perhaps
Grainger will do brisk business today.

FEMA/Homeland Defense also need to tell the American people to purchase:
One .22LR Ruger 10/22 or 77/22 rifle with 500 rds of ammo, and 6-10 magazines.
One pistol or revolver chambered in either .38spl/.357mag, 9mm, .40 S&W, or .45 ACP, with ammo, with 250 rounds of ammo and 4-6 magazines/speed loaders.
One militia/homeland defense capable shotgun either pump our automatic holding 5-8 rounds with 100 rounds of #4 buck, 00 buck, #6 lead, and Saboted Slugs.
One militia/homeland defense capable semi-automatic or select-fire (NFA rules apply) chambered in .30-06, .308 Win, .223 Rem, or 7.62x39 with 1000 rounds of ammo and 12-16 magazines/clips.
Nuff said.

The USA has only one firefighter for every 280 people and one police officer for every 385 people. The local fire chief lives two houses from me and a Ky State Trooper just moved in one house away. Should I be glad or fearful? One advantage - the city keeps the snow and ice off the street so they can get in and out easier.

Reality check.
Tape and plastic will do no good against bio or chem agents. Only a sealed residence with its own air supply -- or one with mil-level filters -- will suffice for that. Plastic sheeting will stop beta particles and low-energy alpha particles from nuclear material, while doing nothing to stop ionizing radiation.
The battery powered radio is good for learning just how f*ck*d you are so, as we used to say in the Navy, you can die all tensed-up.
It's a safe bet the US will get hit by Iraq or other terrorists within the next year or two. Unfortunately, it is impossible to protect the population from such an attack. We are likely to respond with nuclear weaps, ending the "Arab world" and most of Islam.

I see the propaganda machine is still up and running.
I wonder what research this is based on. The duck and cover stuff was based (from what I understand) on research concerning the blast, not the resulting radiation poisoning.

SOBERING FOR SURE.
Where are you in Taiwan?

Did you see the latest Pop Science article on the super tall building going up? I didn't notice if it said exactly where on the street map it's located. Do you know?

There was a house about 100 yards from us across a small valley and stream that had a chimney fire two weeks ago. They are still able to live in it, but barely. It was a new house with a double wall chimney inside a wooden housing on th eside of the house. We have a triple wall and I still ran a liner of plain old stainless steel stove pipe through it for additional safety. We use a themometer on top of th estove to help regulate for more efficient burning. We can get that dude up to 900 plus in just a matter of minutes.

So kill or be killed. Take North Korea out right along with the Entire fanatical Muslim world.

Ask Wally when you get a chance about chimneys and fires.

IF an attack happens that requires one to shelter in place...any suggestions for keeping warm?
We have no natural gas or 'power' heat, just a woodburner in the cellar. (kerosene heaters in 'storage') Either one would be a no-no...right?
Just wondering about that since it's c-o-l-d. And wondering how you'd keep drinking water from freezing, not to mention the food stuffs and kids.
And those who have their pets/dogs...how would THEY handle the call of nature for them? Let them crap in the house? Let them go outside, then back in the house with whatever 'nasty stuff' has been 'detonated'.
To: SLB
OH, another thing...AFTER they say it's 'safe' to come out, HOW do you go about cleaning/'debugging' your house if any of that crap has filtered in?
