Apologize for the cut & paste- here's what I could gather quickly-- first, good advice from our own Utah Girl:
Here is a thread I put together last year right after 9/11. It contains information on a 72 hour kit, the kit has everything in it that one person would need for 72 hours. One can grab it and run. There is also information there about home food storage, using and storing food all the time.

TimeBomb2000 is an awesome Forum for sensible individual preparation and overall news gathering: Over a million detailed threads archived (4 locations) describing every practical self-reliant tip possible.
We all need to be more aware of our surroundings, and think about the things we would need if society were disrupted... I'll admit being less prepared than I used to be, mostly because we lack the money needed to lay in supplies- but we keep basic weaponry, medicine, auxillary lights and radios- stuff like that- handy.
My fallback plan ( since we live in a wooden house in a small city, which is virtually indefensible ) is to retreat to my wife's workplace, about 25 miles out in the country.
This is still the best "one-stop" primer I know about situational awareness:
