"ORANGE": ASHCROFT Press Conference at 12:30

The Bush administration raised the national terror threat level from yellow to orange Friday, meaning the country is at "high risk" of a terrorist attack.

Attorney General John Ashcroft scheduled a news conference at 12:30 p.m. EST, at which time he planned to discuss the decision. He will be accompanied by Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge and FBI Director Robert Mueller.

It would be cool if they could alter Ashcroft's genetic makeup so that his skin changed color like a chamelon's or an octopus' to reflect the terror alerts.

He could just get up there to delver a press conference and we look at him and say, "Well, Ashcroft is orange, we must be a heightened state of warning today," etc.

Watching Ollie North on Fox now. Interestingly, he just said that Abu Nidal, who was rubbed out at his home in Baghdad last summer, was taken out by the Israelis. I wonder if he's blowing smoke. On the other hand, it does make more sense than the other theories I've heard.

It's baloney. We didn't give away any sources. But the old "gotta protect our sources" line does make a good pretext for Bush to keep his cards to his chest.

A number of people are greatly perturbed by this. Some are late getting to their place of employment. Others are forgetting to observe speed limits, forgetting to signal lane changes and even entering intersections on yellow. One confused citizen was observed to park his vehicle this morning straddling the line between two designated parking spaces. It is obvious that the threat of terrorism is nearly as distressing as actual terrorism.
