The '04 Senate Race: Will He or Won't He? [Will King run against Schumer?]

Call it the $30-million question.

It's not a new game show.

The question is whether Rep. Peter King has the wherewithal or the appetite to raise the money needed to wage a marathon statewide media campaign for the U.S. Senate seat held by freshman Democratic Sen. Charles Schumer.

This is no small matter for the Seaford Republican, who by his own estimate has spent only about $250,000 in each of his last two re-election bids. Up to now, King said he has never raised more than $600,000 in any race during his 10-year congressional career.

We should all remember that Peter King was one of the five RINO congresscritters who voted against impeaching president clinton.

Not only that, he took a much more active role than the others, appearing repeatedly on the news chatting with the liberal talking heads, undermining Henry Hyde and the house leaders, and actually lying about what other Republican congressmen had said to him. He repeatedly claimed up to the last minute that there was widespread opposition to impeachment among his Republican colleagues, that they had privately told him so, and that impeachment would never happen.

Some of this may reflect clinton bribery. It was said that clinton gave King's wife a cushy job and that clinton was dangling the Irish ambassadorship in front of King.

In other words, Peter King would be one of the least desirable candidates to run against Chuckie Schumer. If he won, he would scarcely be an improvement.

I agree with everything you said up to this point.

Here I differ. Schumer is such an unbelievable putz and shameless demagogue that even if King turns into Lincoln Chaffee's very liberal younger brother, he would still be a tremendous improvement over Schumer.

King is my congressman. I have become more and more disappointed in him through the years, but if I had to chose between King and Schumer, I'd vote King. I often vote "Right to Life" and King is on that line of the ballot.

Lazio was not wonderful, but he would have been better than Clinton.

As things are now, New York conservatives have no representation in the Senate. Even "moderate" New Yorkers have no representation.

I think Schumer was deliberately (and uncharacteristically) low-key during Hillary Clinton's 2000 run for the Senate, because Liberals were afraid that New Yorkers might think twice about electing yet another left-winger who would like to "revamp" our government.

The liberals had to protect the dirty little secret, that only liberal New Yorkers would have Senate representation, if Clinton were elected.

While King might not be too big an improvement, seen from the viewpoint of a conservative upstater, he has to be better than what we have right now. My personal choice is Rudy Guliani if he can be talked into running. Failing that, anyone even slightly to the right of center [one inch is ok] and a Republican in name will get my vote over Chuckie.

Strictly rumors and wishful thinking right now. There was a poll conducted a couple of months back showing Rudy hammering ol' incumbent Chuckie.

Is this a "slip of the tongue"? Isn't Hildabeast supposed to be the "freshman" senator - Chuckie was already in the senate when she stole her electon. Doesn't that make him the senior Senator????

For me, its Rudy "Si" King "No"! It's a choice between two RINOs and on balance give me Rudy anytime.
