Most of the world is grieving, but some say 'God has retaliated'

02/02/2003

The Washington Post

LONDON – Much of the world expressed shock, grief and condolences Saturday for the loss of the space shuttle Columbia and its seven-member crew, but some in the Arab world saw the tragedy as divine justice against the United States and Israel.

< snip >

But on the streets of Baghdad, Iraq, where many are braced for U.S. military action, some said the loss of the shuttle and its crew was God's retribution.

"We are happy that it broke up," government employee Abdul Jabbar Quraishi told Reuters news service. "God wants to show that his might is greater than the Americans. They have encroached on our country. God is avenging us."

Noting that among the dead was Col. Ramon, a fighter pilot who participated in a 1981 bombing attack that destroyed an Iraqi nuclear reactor, car mechanic Mohammed Jaber Tamini said: "Israel launched an aggression on us when it raided our nuclear reactor without any reason. Now time has come, and God has retaliated to their aggression."

Gen 18:23 And Abraham drew near, and said, Wilt thou also destroy the righteous with the wicked?

Gen 18:32 And he said, Oh let not the LORD be angry, and I will speak yet but this once: Peradventure ten shall be found there. And he said, I will not destroy it for ten's sake.

The Biblical account of the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah in Genesis 19 makes it plain that God would not have destroyed the city if He had found even 10 rightious people there.

I believe there are many people in this nation of ours who love God, and seek him with their whole heart. This nation was founded on a belief and honor of God.

I believe the US is one of the few lights in this dark world we live in. We have our problems but we are a light to the rest of the world. Just look at most of the countries around the world. Most cant even feed their own people. They are in moral darkness, violent, and oppressive.

The shuttle accident was just that, a terrible accident. It was not Gods judgment on America.

Often when Airplane accidents occur, we'll find an interview from a "particular passenger" who for some reason or another "missed the doomed flight". Without fail, that passenger will say "thank God I wasn't on that flight".

With the shuttle, I am sure there were a few Astronauts feeling pretty let-down because they didn't make this mission.

Do you hear any interviews with them YET, giving God praise and Glory because weren't on THIS final flight? I'm sure they are on their knees thanking God they weren't. Were they spared on purpose? Who knows.

My point is, while there are those who ask question "why them?", the people who weren't on the ill-fated flights, also ask God "why me"?

There is no answer.

Living is a risk, some take more chances then others, and then we bring "free will" into the picture. It's useless to try and figure it all out. We're not supposed to.

Mary followed Gods' plan but she sufferred a terrible loss seing her son tortured and murdered.

Suffering I have learned throughout my life can happen to the best of us and I still praise God for my life I do not rant about punishment I love him regardless of my human sufferings.

I think joyful1 you are only perceiving the word of God in a limited veiw try multi faceted like a diamond and you will grow to appreciate all of Gods' glory.

"But on the streets of Baghdad, Iraq, where many are braced for U.S. military action, some said the loss of the shuttle and its crew was God's retribution"

This comes as no great surprise. In fact, I would have been surprised had they reacted otherwise. What I actually find more disturbing is the number of people inside our own borders that express the same kinds of sentiments. Over there we know who the enemy is. Here, we seem to have trouble distinguishing between then good guys and the bad guys.

Are you saying that God hated those astronauts so He killed them? He's like a great cosmic Hitman? Hmmm...that would also mean that if someone has a tragic accident or disease, then God hated them.

Remember Job's "helpful" friends? Some here are like them.

You forget that as bad as we are we are still the best the world has ever seen. Our good outweights our bad so why would God remove us from the face of the earth?

So, if America is the ONLY country that deserves the wrath of God for appalingly perverted behaviors, then that must mean that He is BLESSING and CONDONING the behaviors in countries like, Iraq, China, N.Korea, Palestine. I'll bet He is even TELLING them HOW to perform horrors over there, right?

And if America is to be destroyed because of the issues you listed, then He must be DELIBERATELY and WILLFULLY ignoring the prayers and efforts of those of us who are AGAINST such issues. So according to your mindset, the prayers of righteous men availeth NOTHING and do NOT matter a WHIT to the Lord. Oh...I KNOW, when 'we' hit our knees, God tunes us out so He can claim in 'good faith' that He HAD to act against America. (He has your image/portrayal of Him to uphold, doesn't He?)

Can you enlighten us and tell us which of those lost astronauts were BIG TIME abortion pushers/supporters? After all, they must have been guilty of that if God killed them/removed His protective Hand to make a statement. And traveling along YOUR trail of 'thought', then He must be keeping His Hand of 'protection' over the abortion industry since they are NOT suffering like the aborted innocents on 9/11 or the Challenger yesterday.

You and others are painting a picture of a God who sits up in Heaven with a huge ballbat, waiting to knock off good AND evil people. And the picture of that God is probably not Someone an unbeliever would trust enough to get close to. But maybe that is the intention of the 'God's gonna get you because of the sins of the neighbors up the road' crowd.

Hey Abdul, flying into space is a bit more risky than riding camels! You can dream about flying carpets while our God gives us the gifts to make those carpets fly into space.

Pray for GW and the Shuttle families

God couldn't make it more clear. God has repeatedly told us through the prophets that if humans will serve Him and follow His commandments (at least keep a civilized level of decency and morality), He will bless and protect. If we do not serve Him and follow His ways, we will be punished.

The Bible also says that God has made the rain fall on both the good and evil. The protection we are promised is everlasting life and spiritual protection, not a trouble free life here on earth.

How would you account for the beheading of John the Baptist, the stoning of Stephen, etc, etc.?

"Why should God shed His grace on America with behavior so apallingly perverted"

For the sake of those who love Him and pray to Him and for the sake of those who may yet be delivered, His grace remains.

"Abraham came near and said, "Will You indeed sweep away the righteous with the wicked? "Suppose there are fifty righteous within the city; will You indeed sweep {it} away and not spare the place for the sake of the fifty righteous who are in it? "Far be it from You to do such a thing, to slay the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous and the wicked are {treated} alike. Far be it from You! Shall not the Judge of all the earth deal justly?" So the LORD said, "If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will spare the whole place on their account." And Abraham replied, "Now behold, I have ventured to speak to the Lord, although I am {but} dust and ashes. "Suppose the fifty righteous are lacking five, will You destroy the whole city because of five?" And He said, "I will not destroy {it} if I find forty-five there." He spoke to Him yet again and said, "Suppose forty are found there?" And He said, "I will not do {it} on account of the forty." Then he said, "Oh may the Lord not be angry, and I shall speak; suppose thirty are found there?" And He said, "I will not do {it} if I find thirty there." And he said, "Now behold, I have ventured to speak to the Lord; suppose twenty are found there?" And He said, "I will not destroy {it} on account of the twenty." Then he said, "Oh may the Lord not be angry, and I shall speak only this once; suppose ten are found there?" And He said, "I will not destroy {it} on account of the ten." As soon as He had finished speaking to Abraham the LORD departed, and Abraham returned to his place." (Gen. 18:23-33)

"Celebrating while wearing a Chicago Bears jersey."

Now that pisses me off.

God hasn't retaliated yet but he will. IMO, people who literally reside in Babylon should not be babbling about God retaliating.

"Those things are all outlawed in Muslim countries. Maybe God is a Muslim."

That must be it. I'm sure God condones hating ones enemies more than loving ones children. We've had it wrong all this time. (message for joyful1 - what a misnomer)
