The Green Hills of Earth
Let the sweet fresh breezes heal me
As they rove around the girth
Of our lovely mother planet
Of the cool, green hills of Earth.
We rot in the moulds of Venus,
We retch at her tainted breath.
Foul are her flooded jungles,
Crawling with unclean death.
[ --- the harsh bright soil of Luna ---
--- Saturn's rainbow rings ---
--- the frozen night of Titan --- ]
We've tried each spinning space mote
And reckoned its true worth:
Take us back again to the homes of men
On the cool, green hills of Earth.
The arching sky is calling
Spacemen back to their trade.
ALL HANDS! STAND BY! FREE FALLING!
And the lights below us fade.
Out ride the sons of Terra,
Far drives the thundering jet,
Up leaps a race of Earthmen,
Out, far, and onward yet ---
We pray for one last landing
On the globe that gave us birth;
Let us rest our eyes on the friendly skies
And the cool, green hills of Earth.

Eternal Father, Strong To Save,
Whose Arm Hath Bound The Restless Wave.
Who Biddst The Mighty Ocean Deep
Its Own Appointed Limits Keep.
O Hear Us When We Cry To Thee
For Those In Peril On The Sea!
Lord Guard And Guide The Men Who Fly
Through The Great Spaces In The Sky.
Be With Them Always In The Air,
In Darkening Storms Or Sunlight Fair.
Oh, Hear Us When We Lift Our Prayer
For Those In Peril In The Air!

I can certainly understand why.....this is a terrible incident. I hope its aftermath won't damage U.S./Israeli relations, & may actually make our friendship as sovereign nations even stronger than it was before (take THAT, you Progressive Leftists!). Makes me wonder if the Palestinians/Islamicists are now partying & dancing in the streets like they did when they 1st heard about the destruction of the WTC buikdings, considering the fact that an Israeli was on board the space shuttle Columbia.
We're at war
All the papers say
We will win
I read today
We are strong
It wasn't us
We are right
Who started this
Leave your work
I just left school
Leave your home
I am no fool
Take up arms
It left me strong
Sound alarms
The school bell rings
Sons of men who stand like gods
We give life to feed the cause
And run to ground our heathen foe
Our name will never die
This time will be forever
Join up here
I wave good-bye
We need you
Oh my breast sighs
Have no fear
Now I must try
God will be
With braver men
Take the vow
I know it's right
Praise the flag
The good fight
We're at war
I'm on my way
We will win
Why do I pray
Sons of men who stand like gods
We give life to feed the cause
And run to ground our heathen foe
Our name will never die
This time will be forever
I wait here in this hole
Playing poker with my soul
I hold the rifle close to me
It lights the way to keep me free
If I die in a combat zone
Box me up and ship me home
If I die and still come home
Lay me where the rose is sown
Sons of men who stand like gods
We give life to feed the cause
And run to ground our heathen foe
Our name will never die
This time will be forever

Follow the link below and LISTEN to "A Fire In The Sky." Warning, you'll weep.
Prometheus, they say, brought God's fire down to man.
And we've caught it, tamed it, trained it since our history began.
Now we're going back to heaven just to look him in the eye,
and there's a thunder 'cross the land, and a fire in the sky.
Gagarin was the first, back in nineteen sixty-one,
When like Icarus, undaunted, he climbed to reach the sun.
And he knew he might not make it, for it's never hard to die.
But he lifted off the pad and rode a fire in the sky.
Yet a higher goal was calling, and we vowed we'd reach it soon.
And we gave ourselves a decade to put fire on the moon.
And Apollo told the world, we can do it if we try:
And there was one small step, and a fire in the sky.
Bridge:
I dreamed last night of a little boy's first spaceflight,
Turned into me, watching a black and white TV.
There was a fire in the sky, I'll remember until I die.
A fire in the sky...a fire in the sky!
Then two decades from Gagarin, twenty years to the day.
Came a shuttle named Columbia, to open up the way.
And they said she's just a truck, but she's a truck that's aiming high.
See her big jets burning, see her fire in the sky.
Yet the Gods do not give lightly of the powers they have made.
And with Challenger and seven, once again the price is paid.
Though a nation watched her falling, yet a world could only cry.
As they passed from us to glory, riding fire in the sky.
Now, the rest is up to us, and there's a future to be won.
We must turn our faces outward, we will do what must be done.
For no cradle lasts forever, every bird must learn to fly ---
And we're going to the stars, see our fire in the sky.
Yes, we're going to the stars, see our fire in the sky!
There's a fire in the sky, I'll remember until I die.
A fire in the sky, a fire in the sky!

By the way, if anyone knows of a link to the musically simpler version played at the Challenge Memorial, I'd very much appreciate a link.

I knew it wasn't going to get to me until I saw their faces. I remember the Challenger and it deeply scarred my little 11-year old psyche at the time. I still hold my breath everytime a space shuttle launches until you hear them say "go throttle up" and nothing happens. I am heartbroken this morning for these families and my deepest sympathies to Israel. We will have a partner country in mourning this time.

The whole world mourned with us last time.
This time, the media is going to make sure we know we have fewer friends and more enemies who gloat.

This thread deserves a ping from big ping list holders, ever though it is a little out of standard ping list usage charter.
