A Stinger missile couldn't do that much damage. A better way to deliver an explosive would be by carrying in a stick of dynamite.

Stay inside; lock doors tight for a better seal. Turn off heat and close vents. Stay well.

Well, there was no sign of anywhere near 150 people in the triage area earlier, so I'm guessing the media is just making the assumptions of deaths by noting the lack of people transported to hospitals.

Was talking to a nurse friend of mine who turned on her TV at home (watching WRAL) and she said there were blue tarps everywhere. She says that means dead bodies.

A police spokesman said there were "multiple casualties." Asked if that meant multiple people killed, he said, "Yes."

This is from the article in my Post #93.

A quick google search of the company and anthrax and smallpox didn't bring up any link.

I doubt there is any strategic value in this plant, probably just another unfortunate industrial accident. They happen.

UPDATED report from WRAL:

Massive Explosion, Fire At Kinston Pharmaceutical Plant

POSTED: 2:07 p.m. EST January 29, 2003
UPDATED: 3:17 p.m. EST January 29, 2003

Emergency crews are at the scene of a massive explosion at a pharmaceutical plant near Kinston's Global TransPark.

The explosion happened at 1:30 p.m. at West Pharmaceutical.

A spokeswoman at Lenoir Memorial Hospital said at least three people in critical condition with burns were at the hospital and more victims were expected.

Helicopters from Duke and UNC Hospitals have been dispatched to the scene and crews at thosehospitals are awaiting victims.

Dozens of ambulances and other emergency vehicles are lined up along Rouse Road, near the blast site.

The force of the explosion reportedly rocked nearby homes and buildings, including Parrott Academy. The private school, located less than a mile away, is being evacuated after windows were reported blown out from the force of the blast. There are no reports of injuries at the school.

Lee Edwards, who lives beside the plant, said debris from two 800-feet-tall water towers flew in the air and the woods behind the company were on fire.

"All I can see is just the black smoke, just billowing up in the air. I mean, the whole sky is black," he said. "It exploded. It knocked me over."

West Pharmaceutical employees 255 people at the plant; however, there is no word how many people were working at the time of the blast.

The company produces syringe plungers and IV fitments.

Early reports suggested a plane crashed into the building. Christopher White, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration in Atlanta, said no aircraft were involved in the explosion, which occurred near the Global Transpark airport. The airport remained open.

Stumbled across it while searching for a BBC World live feed. It apparently is tied to Univ. of Michigan's cable system. I try not to give it out to lots of folks though, lest it goes away...

THere is a GE plastics about 30 miles away from where I live. The warehouse caught fire a couple of years ago and we could smell it where I live. It burned for 4 days and they finally called the Red Adair firefighting company from Houston, Tx. to come and put it out. I went to help fight it for a couple of days. THe local FF's were exhausted so they called fire depts. from 50-60 miles away in all directions.

We had one of our warehouses filled with plastic products catch fire 15+ years ago and it melted the I-beams into the sewer and spalled the concrete out in the parking lot. It burned out in two days. Once plastic starts burning, it reverts to petroleum really fast...

I suppose coal dust or flour or something similar could also cause such an explosion (but do these exist in a pharmceutical plant?)

"Carbon black" is often used to make the latex rubber stoppers "jet black" -- just like automobile tires. Combustible powders are sometimes explosive.

Beware.

It was a pretty hot fire. There was molten plastic everywhere. It wasn't really an explosion, but had been burning for some time before anyone found it. It had a good start.
