Feds obtain sealed case of Ritter's arrest

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) -- Federal authorities have obtained the sealed records in the alleged Internet sex sting of former U.N. chief weapons inspector Scott Ritter to review for possible federal charges.

State Supreme Court Justice Joseph Teresi signed an order Thursday requiring police and Albany County prosecutors to provide records and any evidence to the FBI and the U.S. attorney's office.

Federal authorities filed a motion earlier in the week to obtain the records to determine whether federal laws were violated, the Daily Gazette of Schenectady and the Times Union of Albany reported in Saturday editions.

Assistant U.S. Attorney William Pericak refused to comment to the newspapers. A message to his office by The Associated Press was not immediately returned Saturday.

Ritter, 41, a critic of the Bush administration's push toward war with Iraq, acknowledged his June 2001 arrest this week in national television appearances but said he was prohibited from discussing details because the charges had been dismissed and the records sealed.

Ritter has suggested recent news reports about the arrest were an attempt to silence him. He said the publicity has forced him to cancel a recent trip to Baghdad, where he said he would have offered an alternative to military action.

Broadcast reports when he was arrested and recent newspaper reports have indicated Ritter was caught in an Internet sex sting, something he did not admit.

At the time of the arrest, NBC station WNYT-TV of Albany reported that William Scott Ritter Jr. -- Ritter's full name -- was charged with trying to lure an undercover police officer posing as a 16-year-old girl to a restaurant.

WNYT broadcast Ritter's mug shot but did not make the connection to his role as the chief U.N. weapons inspector in Iraq during most of the 1990s.

He was charged with attempted endangerment of a child, a misdemeanor that carries up to 90 days in jail, reports said. The case was adjourned in contemplation of dismissal, meaning that if he stayed out of trouble for six months, the charges would disappear and the file would be sealed.

"Never forget that it was Ashcroft, in the earliest iteration of the Anti-Terrorism bill, who advocated the suspension of habeas corpus. If there is a beating heart within the body of laws that protect our freedoms, habeas corpus is it."

Another DU libertarian.

The only reason why the leftist media is defending Scott Ritter is because he is against President Bush. You can best believe if he was repeating his sworn testimony in 1998 that Saddam had WMD's and needed to be stopped as a matter of National Security, we would be seing Scott ritter be portrayed as the "Face of Conservatives" and comparing him to Bob Packwood.

I'm glad the FEDS have decided to look into this, Not because I think Ritter should be prosecuted by the FEDS, But why did the case get sealed and who ordered it. There is more to this story and I can't help but think the DNC is involved. Ritter was compromised somewhere and sometime and I believe either Hillary, Bill or that smarmy Terry McAuliffe has something very big on him

Exactly. They apparently will turn a blind eye to rape so long as the rapist is pro-abortion.

Just the thought of it makes me want to throw up. I'm so tired of people who give no thought to killing the most innocent among us. Freegards.

The story got sealed because our defenders, i.e. firemen, policemen, etc, get "points" when arrested, at least in NY.

I can't remember whether I heard it on Rush Limbaugh or the local Albany radio station, where a father called in and said he was really angry that local families weren't warned that a pedophile was living in their area. This father of a daughter was livid, as well he should be. I agree with this father - Ritter is one bad dude.

Yes, I heard that and I posted on a early thread that tidbit.

If you don't mind, Explain what you mean by "points", Do you mean that when a Fireman propositions a young girl for a sexual encounter they get "POINTS" instead of justice?

I understand Ritter being in court was probably a big deal for a local court, But if we can't get the courts and law enforcement to protect our children from perverts like Scott Ritter... Who will?

"I doubt Crummey could be bought off. He was involved in a sensitive case a couple of years back and could not afford more bad press."

Good, because I'm still leaning toward the idea that he felt overwhelmed and out of his leage if Scuddie turned on the "Power of the UN" stuff...I keep wondering if Crummey thought he was protecting the integrity of the UN....maybe his country too...

The Assistant DA...I still think that's a different story though to give her the benefit of the doubt, she might have been a bit overwhelmed too...as in starstruck.

here is part of what was told to me by either Ritter or a lawyer friend of his! Notice his use of the rule of Law.

And, incidentally, as a Democrat I stand for the precious principle of presumption of innocence, due process, and rules of evidence. I would even defend the presumption of innocence for Doug from Upland were he to be labeled a sexual predator without a full and fair trial and conviction. I freely extend to the accused the Constitutional protection that keeps tyranny at bay. I would fight to defend that principle even for TLB.

That kind of reverence for the rule of law is what separates Dems from Pugs.

Unless of course its a Republican under the gun!

"But I hope to heck he didn't. Just imagine which character in this saga would get the blaring headlines. (Hint: not the payoff paying perv Ritter)"

I hope he didn't too, for the same reason...I really don't think he did. If I were a local judge, faced with a case that might have international repercussions, I think I'd be a little overwhelmed. Alright...I'd be a nervious wreck. Though Crummey couldn't have known it at the time, the case IS having international repercussions.

To ignore the fact that Scott Ritter took it upon himself to use his keyboard and his Internet connection to lure a child into meeting him with the expectations of a sexual encounter is irresponsible and reprehensible. There is no limit on how low the leftist media will go in order to protect the rapist, pedophiles, and sexual predators that make up their ideology. These people are lacking a soul PERIOD

YOU NAILED THAT ONE!!!!

And you are 100% Correct!!!
