USO Canteen FReeper Style ~ Military Valentines Day Project Thread 2 ~ January 22 2003

The original idea about organizing a Canteen project to mail packages
to the military belongs to MoJo2001
What started out with a simple FReep mail to several people quickly became a hit.
My 2 cents was to suggest that we get this project underway
in time to get these packages to the military by Valentines Day.
I think there are many different ways to do this.
Our goal is get get packages and/or cards, letters and e-mails to the military
so thay do not feel alone or forgotten on Valentines Day.
If you have not been to the USO Canteen Post Office recently there are new links and info there.
Info on what to include in Care Packages, snail mail postcards, new e-mail links, phone cards, etc.
Several FReepers have obtained snail mail addresses for active duty military.
Some of you have family and friends serving right now.
As you can tell this project can go in many different directions.
Some of you may want to "team" up with others to send one big package.
Others may want to do this by themselves.
Some may just want to e-mail or snail mail Valentines messages.
What is needed now is to post approved snail mail addresses of military bases and/or individuals.
I propose that each Wed between now and Valentines Day the thread be used to update info and ideas.
So to qoute a great patriot of 9/11 "LETS ROLL" and get this project underway!

I agree...highway robbery by ATT. As much as they can charge Stateside at times, they can afford to give our military a bit of a break, IMHO!
Is that the only phone card access you have? I have an inquiring mind. *grin*

Yep... that's the only card access we have. And, to top it off, there are only a select few Sailor Phones on the ship. But, I have to say, that I remember my first ship back in the 80's that we only had INMARSAT at (ready for this.....) $35.00 a minute!! We also utilized HAM radios for when we were close to shore and could pick up other HAM radio operators who could then patch a call stateside.

To: bkwells
Oooops! I got involved with e-mails to some of the folks I've been corresponding with and forgot to check back here. Sorry!
Thanks for the info on the cards. It's something we all needed to know about.
OUCH!! $35 a minute is outrageous!!!! It sure makes today's rates seem like nothing, doesn't it? LOL!
I hope all's well with you and the crew! :-))

I've made up my mind I'm not stepping out of the house today. It's 9 degrees now with a wind chill below zero...and the high's only going to be around 15 degrees!!
I feel like I went to sleep in TN. and woke up in Alaska! LOL!!

Coldest temps we've had in a few years. They're calling for -2 and colder for tonight.
This kind of weather is keeping ALL these critters inside for a day or two, til it warms up a little. Aaaaargh! That means they'll be underfoot! It tends to get a little dangerous when they're all inside. LOL!

You are soooo right about pre-paid phone cards. I used them for years. Now if I could just convince my hubby they're the way to go.....
