When Rep. Charles Rangel, D-N.Y., called recently for the return of a military draft, he evoked images of inequality raised during the early years of the Vietnam War, when black soldiers died at rates much greater than their share of the U.S. population.

That was a lie then, and it's still a lie now.

Blacks were 13% of the population and 13% of the casualties in Viet Nam.

My son (in the Army reserves) says that Latinos are very prominent in combat arms.

You know, it wouldn't surprise me a bit if the lefties and race baiters don't figure out a way to turn that statistic into a "Racism in the Ranks" arguing point. Doesn't it make far more sense to suggest that blacks are looking at the military as a way to get the education they need? I work at for a computer manufacturer with electronic thechnicians who are almost entirely ex-military. Most of these guys are from "disadvantaged" backgrounds and they gave their time to the military for a period of years and got in return a marketable skill. Sounds like win-win to me. Why should anyone complain?

I don't know if they've analyzed this, but I'd suspect that there's another influence: combat is much more technology driven than in the past, and requires skills other than simply being able to slog along with a gun in one hand and a lot of weight on your back.

When applicants are accepted into the military, they have to go through a considerable amount of testing for placement purposes. I would suspect that contemporary urban black applicants, thanks to their formation in the public schools and the general ethos of their environment, probably do not do well on these tests and therefore do not go into combat specialties. I don't know if they keep statistics on this or not.

Rangel is full of BS. With 14% of the military eligible population blacks suffered 12% of the combat deaths in Nam!

Blacks, especially in the enlisted ranks, tend to be disproportionately drawn to non-combat fields such as unit administration and communications. They are underrepresented in jobs shooting rifles or dropping bombs.

As a matter of fact, the military "needs to even that out". According to Jessie, Al, etc., blacks would be underrepresented on the battle filed.
Where are the "quotas" supporters now? Hello? Where are the NOW hags demanding woman equal quotas? Hello?After all, they bitch about everything else, so why not this?
Peaceniks say their for peace, but only if a Republican is president, otherwise they're celebrating war.

From what I have seen in my limited contact with SF trainees over the last few years,you can safely lump them in with the rural whites. In fact,they seem to be taking the place rural whites traditionally took as the backbone of the army. I kid you not,when I would see a group of trainees who had a E-5 or E-6 with a name like "Martinez",I would be overjoyed because I knew there was at least ONE guy in the group who had the smarts and the motivation to learn and take charge. Too often the white guys would do their damndest to just skate though with a minimum of effort,but these guys took it seriously. It must be said though that it seemed like the majority of the white guys in these classes were city boys who were looking for a "badge",not a career.

You can also bet your ass that when you see a American Indian who is a student that there is another guy who takes the training seriously.

There must have been 10% to 15% blacks in the Marine Corps in those years....and I doubt they were draftees that early in the war...
