Arizona governor promises licenses for undocumented immigrants

Phoenix, U.S., January 14, 2003 (EFE)- The governor of Arizona promised visiting Mexican lawmakers that she would sign legislation that would allow undocumented immigrants in that state to obtain driver's licenses.

Janet Napolitano met with five members of the Mexican Chamber of Deputies' Foreign Relations Committee last weekend, just days before she was scheduled to be sworn in as governor of Arizona.

In 1994, Arizona passed a law prohibiting those without social security numbers from obtaining a driver's license.

Since then, undocumented immigrants have been forced to drive without a license and without auto insurance, which requires applicants to have a valid license.

The legislators also discussed trafficking in undocumented immigrants along the Arizona-Sonora border.

The delegation expressed concern about actions taken by civilian groups that patrol the border.

The deaths in 2002 of more than 100 undocumented Mexican immigrants in the Arizona desert prompted the five lawmakers to travel to Arizona to meet with government officials and human rights activists.

"We're very pleased with the governor's position, and hope that our fellow countrymen can obtain driver's licenses in the very near future," Congressman Efren Leyva Acevedo said.

Granting driver's licenses to undocumented immigrants was a campaign promise Napolitano made to the state's Hispanic community. EFE

I'm really not sure how obtaining an Arizona driver's license once an illegal is well within the state will reduce the death toll of illegals attempting to enter the country, but I've had a lot of trouble grasping the logic of the illegal immigration boosters as it is...

Get lost, and quit telling American citizens what to do in their own country.

Up untl recently, the governor of Arizona USED to be a Steve Forbes Republican and the state of Arizona WAS solidly consevative. This all changed with the 2002 election results. All the "big winners" were liberal Democrats who pander to illegal aliens. Gee whiz, I wonder how they got elected < /sarcasm>

Arizonians better hope and pray this latest initiative doesn't pass, or the state will end up with Senator Raúl Grijalva in 2004. Illinois had a statewide GOP landslide in 1994 (all statewide offices and both houses of the legislature). In the aftermath of our RINO governor selling licenses to ILLEGAL aliens in 1998, a bunch of Chicago machine 'RATs now hold every office except state Tresurer (held by RINO Topinka). This is now Luis Guiterrez's (D-Chicago) turf. Be forewarned!

I wept when NapalitanoReno smugly and arrogantly announced her win. A sad day for us Arizonans. Thank goodness the Republicans still hold the legislature. I hope they keep a tight rein on that woman. Actually, I'm hoping for some horrible fiasco, like the alternative fuel thing a few years ago, to happen while she's in office so she can take the credit, er blame, and either get kicked out of office or be so utterly humiliated that re-election is impossible.

You know what will happen? Legal citizens will be involved in many more accidents caused by the illegals which will in turn cause our insurance rates to go thru the roof. And crime--heck, in Phx. this past weekend, there were 6 murders.

I'm hoping they investigate this Exec. Order nonsense. I didn't think this was legal.

I don't think it's an executive order:

She got in because of soccer moms, injuns who wanted to keep their casino business all to themselves, and Tucson voters (aka Berkely in the desert) and also Baloney Mahoney splitting the vote.

Maybe, but the big advertising drive for the three Indian gambling initiatives brought the reservation voters to the polls, plus Dick Mahoney's action as a spoiler put this witch in office. This is an attempt by Janet N-a-pal-o'-Reno to import more Dem voters. Hopefully this won't be repeated in 2006 since the gambling proposition that passed in 2002 lasts for 23 years, but who knows?

How is it that a politician like this dimbulb can flaunt the fact that she's thumbing her nose at federal law?

I don't get it either. It's like giving a convicted felon with a feferal charge a pistol permit from the state.

Does anyone know if illegally trespassing over an international border is a felony?

Shouldn't there be some way for someone in that state to sue the state government?

I just don't see how this can even be legal. Let's see, someone comes here illegally....and we give them a legal document?

Since when did 2 + 2 = 5?

A promise she won't have to honor, since it will never reach her desk.

actually it is the democrat scum that has left the hell it created in california, who have now moved to arizona for the purpose of stenching it up as well.

they are soccer mommies....
they move in, vote for "common sense" changes to laws that will "help the children, women and weak ones" of our society.. and then move when their socialist hell, ruins every thing good that USED to be there.

Those who want a government big enough to legislate every aspect of life, are often those who get the hell out of dodge that quickest, when that government ruins every thing they have...

Bye bye, to the beautiful and relatively FREE western United States. The socialists along with the statist RINO republicans have taken it upon themselves to "legislate" everything from sex to drivers licenses for illegals... in the name of "utopian bliss".

Why don't they just leave us all the hell alone? Because there are ALWAYS "common sense" laws they can pass to make things better (in their subjective view of course).

what a mess. Who said "That government governs best, which governs least?"
