At this rate, there won't be any South Korea left within a decade.

What a jerk! There will be one Korea -- all run by the North. If we get tossed out, hope we level everything that we had over there to keep the communist from getting it!

'Although we don't know if it might take 10, 20 or 30 years, someone has to consider an independent defence,'

Fine with me. However, the RoK's current defense stance seems to be the 'Jimma Cahter' style and we are responsible for our own security interests regarding the Northcomms and nuclear proliferation/bribery.

China is behind all of this and needs to face economic pain...why we are, in essence, strengthening our biggest enemy (Red Chinese/Russian alliance) and not dealing with them here and now will be our eventual end.

Bring our troops home and protect our own borders. They should bring them home from the Balkins and let those people kill the Muslims threatening them. We should get out of Germany while we are at it, let Europe worry about Europe's defense.

I am not a military expert, so this all could be really idiotic, but...

I think that we should begin troop withdrawal from South Korea fairly soon. Our strength is our ability to project force in a flexible manner. Fixed vulnerable troops are not a good idea in such a hotspot, IMHO.

We are massively outnumbered in an unsupported ground war on the Korean Peninsula and sufficient support would take to long to deploy. We need to pull back and let South Koreans defend the border against the EVIL EMPIRE of North Korea. We can help from a safer distance.

America defended West Germans against East Germans. We spent oodles of diplomatic capital keeping Indians from tangling with Pakistanis. We staved off the Russians from threatening Japan. We kept South Koreans safe from North Koreans, and assuaged the fears of both these from the prospect a newly re-militarized Japan.

Granted this was not a pure form of philanthropy; lots of initiatives were in our own selfish interests. But come on -- everyone has their own petty misgivings, and it is just not sustainable for America to go around protecting the whole world from some other part of the world.

Let's not be spiteful about bringing our troops home from South Korea, but neither should fail to hear what they're telling us:

1. Korean problems are best entrusted to Korean folks.
2. Yankee go home.

If we're putting off their warm family reunion, then by all means let's help them set the table....

But for the million South Korean refugees that would surely flood California, I would say our troops can't come home soon enough.

37,000 aren't enough to prevent an onslaught. They are pawns and cannon fodder. We either put in a quarter million troops, or we withdraw. I don't really have an opinion on which option would be better.

Political posturing .... S.koreans are still pissed off about the accident by our military guys that killed 2 girls on the way to school. This guy is just using that to fan the political flames. Realize if we leave so does billions in US dollars that is spent in their country. They would be begging us to stay. This gut is a politician through and through.

'No US troops in S. Korea in a decade'

We should be so lucky. Good riddance and f**k off you ungrateful Korean bastards!

Hahahaha!!!!!!

We have China for our cheap stuff, Japan for our fancy stuff, and Europe for our cheese. Do we really need to risk Americans to ensure the safety of a free S. Korea, especially if they are going to spit in our eye?

As long as the S. Korean semiconductor companies have a decade to move to safer shores, I say let's get our 40,000 guys out of harm's way.

I would certainly hope that the North Korean regime wouldn't last another decade, therefore making his theory almost certainly correct.

First ,Is our economy so dependant on Chinese imports now that we can not use the threat of cutting off trade to force the Chinese to take care of the problems brewing in their own back yard?
Second ,Why should we defend a country that does not want us there?
Third,Is it a slap in the face of our Vets who spilled blood in Korea to just up and leave?
More, Is China today the same kind of China that it was in the period during the Korean War is it not now moving toward more of a free market society where communism should eventually fail?

These are just to add to the discussion, I actually went to China and adopted a child and found a surprising amount of hard working entrepenerial spirit among the people of China (on a individual basis anyway)
truly they are a force to reckon with.
We are truly weakening our own influence in the world by becoming too dependent on this country for our economys well being.

Is it too late?

What if we made a deal with China that if they take the Korea's we will stand down as long as they leave Japan Taiwan etc. alone.

I admit this is a bit simplistic but I do think that it is obvious that the guy In N.K is a nut and has to be dealt with and in my opinion it has to be real soon!
