Yep, engine out sounds better now. We had a lot of frost today in Orlando, which caused me to make that assumption. Like I said earlier, let's let NTSB do their job and see what happened.

Report: No survivors in N.C. plane crash

01/08/2003

By AMANDA GRANGER and JIM GILCHRIEST / nbc6.com

An Air Midwest commuter plane crashed this morning on takeoff from Charlotte-Douglas International Airport, authorities said, killing 19 passengers and two crew members.

Officials at Carolinas Medical Center have been told not to expect any patients.

Eyewitnesses say the small plane was taking off when it suddenly banked to the left and hit a US Airways hangar shortly before 9 a.m. Pictures from NBC6-TV in Charlotte show the blackened corner of the hangar, but a fire reported earlier is no longer burning.

This image from T.V. shows one corner of the hanger hit by the plane blackened and burning.
Smoke was also seen billowing from a charred ditch near the hangar, but the wreckage is not in view.

The plane was enroute for Greenville-Spartanburg Airport when it went down. It was scheduled to arrive at 9:11 a.m.

The runway where the accident happened is shut down, but the airport is not closed at this time.

My husband refuses to fly on turboprops. If jet service is not available, he drives.

"If it occured on takeoff and went into the hanger on it's back it apparently lost an engine on takeoff and the pilot failed to take corrective action that must be done immediatly."

Agree completely. (Comm/Inst S/MEL 200 hrs. and .8 left seat in the Goodyear blimp America! )

Lynchburg, Va. is a city of nearly 200,000 people located 180 miles SW of Washington, DC, famous for Jerry Falwell and several colleges, etc.

Lynchburg, TN, is a picturesque little village in S Cen Tennessee, about 70 miles WNW of Chattanooga, or 70 miles SSE of Nashville. It is famous for Jack Daniels, a brand of whiskey.

Greenville-Spartanburg is a booming important city in NW South Carolina, about 75 miles WSW of Charlotte; it is in the running for the "biggest city you never heard of." Population nearing 1 million.

My husband refuses to fly on turboprops.

That, IMHO, is not a well grounded fear. There's nothing unsafe about turboprops (or recips, for that matter). In this instance, it looks like engine-failure induced yaw is the cause, and that can happen in any multi engine aircraft.

If you are trying to reach your parents on their cell phones, be advized that they rarely work inside airports. Airports are adding scrambling signals. It's very frustrating. I wish you all the best.

PS It is a beautiful day in the South and I doubt that weather was a factor. Check the nut behind the wrench; was he a Muslim?

That's what's nice about the rear engines jets, though. Virtually center line thrust. .... All except the MD-80, which is so underpowered they automatically retract the landing lights if they lose engine, because thrust is so marginal the extra drag from the lights would prevent go-around!
