I took my son to see Michael Moore live at the Roundhouse, in north London, before Christmas. The US radical and author of the best-selling book Stupid White Men was (mostly) clever, funny, angry, sharp, iconoclastic and sceptical about the lies and humbug processed by the US government and big business. Sure there were some flunked bits – you expect that, the troughs are part of the adventure, an evening with a well-worn rebel.

What we did not expect was to feel so enraged at one point that we almost walked out. It was when Moore went into a rant about how the passengers on the planes on 11 September were scaredy-cats because they were mostly white. If the passengers had included black men, he claimed, those killers, with their puny bodies and unimpressive small knives, would have been crushed by the dudes, who as we all know take no disrespect from anybody. God save us from such stupid white men, especially now, when in the US and the UK, black people's lives are being ripped to shreds by drugs, lawlessness, fear and frightful violence plus the endless circle of racism, exclusion and incarceration. This is not awesome, Mr Moore; it is a calamity, for descendants of slaves unimaginably more so.

Michael Moore: Well, uh.. every year or so, I go up another size and I get new clothes, so I.. I never really have to.

Michael Moore: But, Phil, I don't think the American people care about our hygiene. They came to hear our ideas..

Phil Donahue: Alright, then, let me show you a very disturbing statistic. These are the three lowest rated shows on prime-time cable. Do we have that? [ graphic of ratings appears ] And, sadly, here we are, this show, the second lowest rated, with slightly more viewers than "Eye Surgery with Dr. Elliot Ladell", but still less than "The Black Israelites".

Michael Moore: Wow..

Phil Donahue: And, for our viewers, I should point out that this show is actually less than the margin of error in the ratings system itself!

Michael Moore: Thank God.

Phil Donahue: In other words, there is no real evidence that anyone watches this show! Not enough one person! And that tells me that Americans have heard the progressive message, and they're.. just.. not.. buying. [snip]

Typical of the man[?] At about 6 shows per week for 8 weeks that equals $24,000 which the Brits probably tax at a reasonably socialistic welfare state rate of 50-60%. Of course once he returned to the US, he could offset those tax payments against his US Income Tax, so it is not like he went into the hole unless he chose to stay at a deluxe hotel where he could be pampered by the staff. Oh, how difficult it must be to be such a fine example of a 'Stupid White Man'!
